Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We decided to give up our own car in lieu of Street Car Club membership about a year ago.  Despite seeing two separate in the local Haringey magazine about how the network of cars was due to be expanded by another 43 cars (blah, blah, blah) there are still no car club bays available on the ladder.  I've e-mailed both Street Car and Haringey Council but haven't heard back with anything other than vague undertakings, none of which have materialised.  What can I/we do to up the ante?

Antoinette. Well done.
Just keep going up the food chain it's a long process but you'll be doing something for the area permanently. The same (but different) problem is with electric cars. There's not enough points to charge them on moderately long journeys. A lot of talk but little practicle back up to big words.

Other car clubs are available, but it seems LBH has done a deal with Streecar that excludes competition. I wonder why?

Oh, and there are three bays for the whole of Tottenham. Obviously we're not worth the bother.
Streetvan have a couple of vans at the self storage place by Hornsey Station.
I think Haringey's provision hasn't caught up with other boroughs yet. I remember the fanfare about Streetcar being introduced here and, like others here, being a bit unimpressed with the provision near us - one in one of the Gardens roads I think. If you compare with Islington or Camden is very low coverage.

I would be very very interested in seeing if we can get some bays located around here. I would have thought there would be interest, and god knows it would be good to reduce the number of cars looking for parking spaces! Speaking personally, our car isn't in its prime and we're already thinking about what we'll do when it goes to the great scrap yard in the sky. So please keep us posted anyone who finds out more.
It's not just the ladder that's having problems, over in Stroud Green we are also way behind provision levels in nearby Islington.
The Stroud Green Residents Association had a meeting with Haringey Council and Streetcar a few months back and it became clear to me (as a Streetcar user for several years now) that the problem lies with local car owning residents who are resistant to giving up parking spaces near their houses. Until we have a CPZ in our area this cannot be resolved. I'd be happy to give up the space in front of my house for a Street car parking space but apparently I can't do this. Spaces were proposed, near Harringay station for example, but all that the local car owning residents were prepared to consider were spaces on the Oakfield Road railway bridge, a distance away from where most people live. Once proposed spaces are rejected then the whole process has to go back through planning again. This seems to be the cause of the hold-up.

As to Haringey making some kind of exclusive pact with Streetcar, this makes complete sense as this is the one company that has made a success of car sharing and it also means that it's possible to use a Streetcar from almost anywhere in London. If each borough made deals with different companies users wouldn't have this facility.
As an update - Karen Alexander of Haringey Lib Dems has forwarded me some information sent to her from Haringey Council saying they are proposing 35 new car club spaces, four of which are located on the Haringey Ward; one each on Cavendish Road, Fairfax Road, Hewitt Road and Willoughby Road. The consultation papers are due to go out this week, so can I please put out a general war rally to encourage all to provide positive replies to that consultation programme.

Consultation for car club expansion

I am writing to inform you of the Council's consultation proposals for the expansion of the car club scheme.

Following the successful introduction of 27 on-street car club vehicles at 14 locations across the borough in July 2009, there are now over 2300 streetcar members in Haringey, which has more than doubled within a year. The daily usage figures for the car club vehicles in Haringey show that nearly all vehicles are fully utilised.

The Council, in partnership with the operator Streetcar, are now proposing to introduce an additional 42 car club vehicles at 35 locations across the borough between June and August 2010 to service the increasing demand for access to car club vehicles.  

Consultation procedure:

A consultation letter will be delivered to over 17,000 local residents and businesses within the vicinity of the 35 new car club proposals. Plans showing the exact location of each of the 35 new car club locations can be view at http://www.haringey.gov.uk/index/environment_and_transport/parking/...

These letters will be delivered between 25th-29th March and the consultation period will run for 4 weeks. All comments must be received no later than 22 April 2010.

Implementation schedule:


Subject to Lead Member approval, signage and road markings for the car club parking bays will be installed between June-July and the car club vehicles will be delivered and available for members to use between late June and August 2010. Prior to this, local residents and members will be contacted regarding the specific launch date for the car club vehicles and membership discount incentives.


Future expansion

As car club membership continues to grow and demand increases in Haringey, the Council and the car club operator, Streetcar, are keen to further increase the number of car club bays, with a target of having 80 operational car clubs bays by the end of 2010-2011. 

We expect to consult on further car club expansion in the Autumn 2010. The implementation costs for these car club proposals are funded by Transport for London.

 What are the benefits of using a car club?

Using a car club vehicle is a step towards easing local parking problems, reducing
pollution and carbon dioxide emissions. Surveys of Streetcar members reveals the
following benefits:

• Car club members typically give up owning a first or second car on joining; others
defer purchasing their own vehicle due to using the car club instead, resulting in less
parking demand and congestion in that local area.

• It is estimated that for every one car club vehicle introduced, 23 private vehicles are
taken off the road. In Haringey, of the 35 car club vehicles currently in operation, over
800 private cars have been taken off Haringey’s streets due to a good proportion of
members usually selling their own vehicles to join the scheme (CarPlus survey 2009).

• Haringey’s 2300 streetcar members are driving on average 68% less than before they
joined the scheme and are using public transport 40% more (Streetcar membership
survey 2009).

• Car club vehicles emit 36% less CO2 than private vehicles disposed of by car club
members, as car club vehicles are new, efficient and well maintained models
(CarPlus survey 2009).

• Financial savings: If you drive less than 6,000 miles per year then joining a car club
could save you up to £3,500 a year. Replacing a second family car with car club
membership will bring additional financial savings.

Membership of a car club is not suitable for everyone, but if you do not use a car very
often it can be an attractive alternative to car ownership, or to having a second car in
the household.

My only bug-bear about the proposed locations on the Haringey ladder are that they are right at the top of the hill at the Wightman Road end. I nearly have a coronary walking my little boy up Cavendish Road every morning! My suggestion was that the bays should be adjacent to the Harringay passage in order to allow the greatest ease of access to the maximum number of ladder residents.
I just got a brochure through the door about this expansion, with a 28 day consultation period for interested parties.

I'm going to support it though I do think Antionette makes a very good point about the advantages of locating some of the ladder bays at the middle of those roads. Does anyone know where Greaves Court is on Fairfax Road - the other two ladder bays (Hewitt and Cavendish) are both at the Wightman Rd end of those roads?
