Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have again asked for some enforcement action by the council against HGVs using Wightman Road and the ladder roads.

I am pleased to say that I have just had an email from the Parking Infrastructure Manager to say that they will be carrying out some enforcement this week between 7am and 8.30am.

Lets hope it starts to send a message to the companies that they lorries belong to.

Sure John. The point was more general about good driving, not just the weight limit issue. Just thinking about who else is up and down these roads.

You can't legislate for considerate/good driving though.

I have often seen trucks delivering to Yasar Halim but only once was it a vehicle that might have exceeded 7.5 tons.  I have never seen a food delivery to the school but It seems a little unlikely that such a heavy vehicle would be needed.  In any event, a truck carrying glass jars and eggs is hardly likely to drive too fast over a hump.  Let's keep this in perspective.  There are dozens of trucks making perfectly legitimate deliveries in the ladder every day.  It's the ones carrying heavy loads, such as concrete, bricks and sand, that present a problem when driven too fast.

Just a thought - if Jewsons went, would the site then be a good one for a Royal Mail sorting office?

I have just dug out an email from Harringay SNT when I complained about Jewson's back in July 2011.

 

Thank you for your email and sorry for the delay in responding I have been away.
Jewsons have an approved route to their store via Cavendish Rd or (for larger vehicles that might not make the turn at the top of Cavendish Rd) along Wightman Rd from Turnpike Lane as they need access to their store.
The 7.5ton limit has the caveat of "Except for access" and this is a legitimate access reason.
They are one of the more considerate firms and if you have any other concerns about their lorries might I suggest you speak to the store manager. They are very receptive to comments made and will pass information along to their drivers and those of other companies delivering.

This is not how the law operates. The SNT email is nonsense, can you please reply and ask them to clarify? The law states very clearly that the access is street by street, their only access is via the street they are on, not any other more convenient streets. The ONLY legal way for them to get to and from their yard is via Wightman Rd at the northern end.

I also don't have a problem with Jewson using the road in a respectful manner.  But from my short experience of living here it is clear that they don't. 

There are plenty of other offenders too.

Out of interest is the Haringey CCTV car that is often to be seen parked at the junction of Wightman Road & Turnpike Lane enforcing the weight limit or the no right turn restriction?

I have had a lengthy telephone conversation with the manager at Jewsons on Wightman Road this afternoon regarding the issues with HGVs and their lorries speeding on the Ladder roads.

He told me that their lorries don't use Alroy Road for exit or entry to the Ladder because of the weight restriction on the bridge and the tight mini-roundabout.  

Jewsons only have two lorries which are over 7.5t and this depot so there may well be an issue with lorries from the other site at Hornsey - it would be worth escalating this to area management.

He said that lack of signage is an issue - it would make it a lot clear to their drivers and other HGV drivers about the weight restrictions on the Ladder - this is something I am currently following up with the council, to try and get additional signage and replacement for those signs that have been taken down.

We discussed the issue of Jewsons lorries speeding and he said he would take this up with his drivers again.

I suggested that it may be an idea to meet with me and council officers and he agreed this would be useful.  I will try and organise this in the next couple of weeks.

I will pass the idea of the physical weight restriction pictured in an earlier comment to highways for their thoughts - it would certainly do the job very nicely but without excluding dustcarts and emergency vehicles.

Thanks Karen - much appreciated.  If it is lorries from other Jewsons sites using the ladder roads, then they would not of course benefit from the alleged access exemption, so this is something the enforcement team should be made aware of... 

Karen, pass them the video link posted earlier... I would note as well that there has been a bit of discussion about signs being removed etc. One might speculate that someone with an interest in there being a lack of information or ambiguity in the signage could be responsible, but that would be pure supposition.

I would say though that what is clear is that the local Jewson’s cannot pull the old 'the signs ain't clear' nonsense. Even if the signs are not clear the guys locally should be aware of any restrictions because of the amount of correspondence they have had on the topic, so ignorance is no defence I believe.

With that, I would suggest the Council need to be clear exactly what is and is not acceptable in written and unambiguous form to the local and area Jewsons. Any infringement following this should be punished, sign or no sign.

I think he was actually saying that he knows the law very well (they all do when they think they're in the right) and that because there are no signs there, his drivers can do as they please.

I have also thought that the targeted vandalism on 7.5t access only signs on the ladder was more than a little suspicious.
