Thanks Michael.

There was another shortlisted property on Umfreville Road.

Thanks Martin - really interesting schemes though I have to admit this one made me wonder

There should be an 'early learning centre' sign above the door!.

Very nice, in the 1980s I remember working in a house on the ladder which was next to the New River. This house had staircases all over the place and adjoining rooms, and although Victorian seemed to have been designed to be more spacious than the neighbouring houses. I can't remember the road, but all I can remember is that it was on the right on the way down, it even had a door onto the river bank. The owner was a woman in her fifties, and I think she lived there on her own. If she's still around she'd be in her nineties now.

Might it be this house on Umfreville Rd, which matches the characteristics in your description.

See Google StreetView here.

Number 26, house name Clanavon.

Thanks, could well have been Gordon, it certainly fits the description, very palatial, dread to think what it's worth now.
