Haringey Cabinet Proposing Abolition of Council Tax for Low Income Residents

Haringey Council is considering a scheme to remove the burden council tax from the borough's lowest income residents.

A paper going to cabinet tomorrow, aims to deliver on a manifesto pledge to “redistribute the burden of council tax.”

It is thought that around 6,000 families would benefit

If the proposal is approved by the cabinet, a ten week consultation will assess the levels of support  for the scheme.  If levels are sufficient, the scheme will be voted on by the full council.

Thanks for the injection of facts into this thread Jake

Absolutely I'd be supportive if I knew that the council tax was being well spent. That is, spent on what it's supposed to be spent on I.e. local services. Using local resources instead of paying fat cheques to subcontractors. Quite frankly the feedback loop is not there, so for now my answer is no. Tell you what, why don't we put this decision down to the residents (although not sure if a redistribution, as opposed to an outright increase allows for local democracy to have a say)? And to those who quote statistics I have news for you. The point of successful fraud is that you do not see it in the statistics. Grenfell shone a torch on the culture of welfarism, the parasitism of subcontracting and dysfunction of the system. Before this it was the looting in the 2011 riots that highlighted in effective welfare policies. I can go on. I can't help but think this plot is once more an attempt to subsidise the needy to secure a voting base rather than solving the problem of poverty. Local councils and governments (or for some the Easter Bunny) are not the creators of jobs or wealth (pensions, housing). And nor should they be. In recent years it has been the biggest obstacle to jobs and wealth. And when those with wealth who come to live here, spend their money and set up businesses decide enough's enough, then we'll see the race to the bottom.
