Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was called today by a Ladder resident who'd just been the recipient of a scam call. Apparentky a neighbour of his had received a similar call.

He kindly called me to pass on the warning.

Essentially, the scam involves the caller posing as Hammersmith (most probably) or Fulham police station and asking for various secure information that will compromise your financial security. One report explains that "police" say they have arrested someone using your bank card  - and need you to confirm your details to prevent further use.

So BE WARNED.

Happened to me this morning. I just said ! I don't think you have " and hung up.

We received exactly the same call last week.  They claimed they had arrested a burglar and found my American Express card (I don’t have one) on his person.  Fortunately my husband is game for a laugh so kept the caller on the line for ages - asking how he was, if he was planning a holiday this year - until they hung up on him!

^^ in reply to Michael - excellent - that's what I would do

Had a call like this some months ago - the psychological tactic is to keep firing questions at you [hustle, hustle, hustle] to keep up the sense of urgency so you'll join in.

Yep I too was called this week from a DCI Gates from Hammmersmith & Fulham who claimed that some people had been arrested using my card. He even waited on the line as I took in our weekly shop which arrived at exactly the same moment. He said it was desperately urgent. I still had my card but years ago had had a card duplicated and used, He told me to check him out by ringing 999 and saying it was a non-emergency case and that he would transfer me. I said no I'll do that myself and rang off. I did ring 999 later and said it was a non-emergency case. They said they don't deal with those but did transfer me to someone else. Even that made me suspicious. Should have used a different phone. However, the policewoman said that the reference number was made up as was the policeman's name, rank and number. And that was that ... Getting an increasing number of these phishing expeditions especially on land line...

Are any of you ex-directory?

I'm not methinks

Just wondering if there’s any correlation.

Maybe but who knows. It could be that they are phishing in a particular area and then move on... it's just worthwhile being aware that these phishers are on the prowl. I've had them from BT too some time ago wanting to get on my computer. They tell you someone is hacking your machine ... ask you to check a particular file ... that file (which does exist) shows lots of errors ... they ask how many ... when you tell them they show shock ... and then they try to take over if you allow them. I just kept them talking for fun to waste their time (as I had some myself at that mo) but often they catch you under pressure. I now don't trust ANY unsolicitated calls unless I was specifically expecting them and even then I ask for some proof.

But hey ... will look into going ex-directory... I kept a landline as a) it was a requisite at the time for my broadband and b) because my aged relatives tended to use it to contact. As it happens, it has been useful during the pandemic as the mobile signal seems to have weakened downstairs and I often can't make out calls without stepping out so hence have been using landline.

Nor me.

I’m not
