Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All,

You will hopefully have seen a letter from us come through your doors last week on the subject of grit bins in our ward. We'd like to give this as much airtime as possible while winter is still fresh in peoples' minds.

Letter copied below:

We appreciate that returning a slip of paper at the bottom of a leaflet is not everyone’s cup of tea, so we’d like to open up the issue on this website as well.

If you feel your road needs a grit bin installed please say so below, giving your name and the name of your road. If you would prefer to give us this information privately we can be contacted individually as follows:

Cllr. Karen Alexander karen.alexander.haringeylibdems@googlemail.com

David Schmitz info@davidschmitz.org.uk

Chris Ford chris.ford@haringeylibdems.org

In lobbying the Council for these bins we need to demonstrate that we all want them, so please take the time to put in a request – it only takes a second.

Thanks,

Chris Ford

Each man to his own Stan, but to be fair to the LDs Chris, many people have raised the topic on this site. So I imagine Chris has raised this in response to that.
I obviously welcome all opinions but I don't think this is a silly campaign. Being able to walk up and down the streets we live on in icy conditions is, I think, an important local issue and I wouldn't be wasting my/your time and local party money on letters if I didnt think that was the case. You are, of course, free to challenge me on this. But I'm just trying to be helpful.

In terms of cost we're looking at about £150 per bin. The cost of refilling them is something I dont have to hand but will happily post tomorrow. Although I have been assured by colleagues on the council that in the grand scheme of things, the provision of grit bins is by no means a major expense.

As I've said before, if anyone would like to speak to me personally about any local lib dem initiative I would really welcome questions/comments/suggestions/criticisms. My e-mail address is chris.ford@haringeylibdems.org as posted above. My inbox is not a black hole, and you can expect a reply.

Thanks
Chris
I think there are more urgent issues that need to be addressed. Until this winter, in the the past ten years or so, who needed grit bins? We dont all see them as absoultely part of our human rights. I have no idea how much they would cost and fear that they would be abused.
I'm not even sure it's legal for residents to help themselves to the contents of grit bins. Aren't they there as supplies for Council workers ? It might be useful to get a ruling on this from the Council.

Now, in the days when everybody had coal fires there was no problem :)
A heatwave is predicted for the beginning of Aug. The roads will then start melting so we might been grit then??
As promised, an update on the cost of grit bins:

A large bin costs £158, a small one £109. The cost of installation and filling the bin with rocksalt is between £81 and £89 and top ups thereafter cost between £32 and £37. Optional lockable lids cost £20.

So we're looking at a one off cost of about £200 - £250 per bin with, I'd imagine, one top up per bin per year of about £35.

Regarding the legality, I've spoken with the relevant council officer and this is a bit of a grey area but it is certainly not illegal. In all honesty no councillor is going to say that residents cannot use a resource which we ultimately pay for. Bins can be locked during the non-winter months to stop them being used as litter bins, and quickly opened when the weather demands it. Indeed the whole point of having a bin installed is so we can use the grit ourselves.

I hope this helps.
Chris
