Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Does anyone happen to know what the maximum height permitted is for a garden fence? We are in N17 near Downhills/Lordship.  Not sure if this is in my deeds or if the council manage this.  We are putting one up and I don't want to go outside the rules and annoy the neighbours!

Extra points if you happen to know which side fence is your responsibility!

Thx.

My deeds (dated 1892) say that I must make and afterwards maintain a good and sufficient fence next the road and on the sides of my lot marked "T".  It then adds that the fence next the road must not exceed six feet in height.  This obligation is a covenant applying only to the owner of my property.  As to the fence by the raod, there could be later more general rules.  See: http://www.boundary-problems.co.uk/boundary-problems/fences.html

thank you - this site is quite helpful.  I did hear it was 2 meters so this makes sense.  As for which side I own/am responsible for - I think I will have to check my deeds.

Thx

You're supposed to check your deeds but mine didn't say one way or the other...a T denotes your fence....so in the absence of that I believe the convention (at least it was for me) is that as I walk into my garden from the house my fence is the one on the right... you need to apply for planning for any fence or wall over 2m

thank you!

Mine is on the left as I walk into the garden, whereas in the previous house it was on the right, so you really do have to check deeds or ask many neighbours on both sides.

3 things to consider

- planning read here....http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/fenceswa...

- as others suggest the conditions/covenats attached to property itself, and of course

- good neighbourly relations.

And sometimes it is good just to erect the fences on both sides and on your property as you then have 'control' (and cost for maintenance!) over both = what they look like, etc!
