Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

For the past few months, I've had TV signal issues - channels such as Sky News missing, and other channel pictures appearing choppy.

I followed the instructions on the Freeview website to do a manual retune, which is based on local transmitters, and it appears that I'm getting a good signal from the Alexandra Palace transmitter (as expected), but a bad/zero signal from the Crystal Palace transmitter (which unfortunately broadcasts many channels). I didn't used to have any problems, this only started a few months ago.

Has anyone else in the local area had TV signal issues recently?

All ok here at north end of Wightman. Alexandra Palace should be the same channels as Crystal Palace

On the Ladder/Gardens, the Alexandra Palace transmitter is very nearly 180 degrees opposite to the Crystal Palace transmitter, so if your aerial points to the first, you'll not get much from the other.

That said, there's another issue if you have (like me) a 1980s old-style analogue UHF aerial which will pick up MOST of the Freeview channels. Some of the higher-frequency channels are beyond its ken, though.

The Freeview website will tell you more, I hope.

And John D has a TV broadcasting background... :-)   (I'll be wearing out this smiley today!).

You know far too much about me :-)

I also have this issue. Do we need to change our aerial then?

Have a look at where the majority of aerials in your immediate area are pointing. If yours points in a different direction it may need realigning. It may have become displaced in the storm. Also check if yours is smaller (fewer elements). The Wightman Road end has a fairly clear line of sight to Crystal Palace. When I lived in Quernmore Road I could see CP, and the signal was so strong "a piece of wet string" was good enough for an aerial! At the bottom of the hill it is probably a poor signal, and AP might be a better bet.

Are there any trees in your vicinity that need lopping? One of the houses that backs on to ours has a tree that's grown so big it was blocking our Sky signal. The owners aren't interested in having a dialogue about pruning the tree to a more reasonable height, so we've had to have our dish moved onto our roof to get past it.
