Just an eight minute drive from Harringay, the Walthamstow Wetlands scheme successfully secured Round Two Heritage Lottery Funding of £4.4m last month. This means that the project can now progress to delivery phase.
The funding means that Walthamstow Council can now open up Walthamstow Reservoirs to the public. This will make a unique 200 hectare site, two miles long, one mile wide and comprising ten reservoirs.
The London Wildlife Trust will undertake the management of the site, enhancing habitats for a wide range of species and ensuring that visitor numbers do not adversely affect the site’s important wildlife.
Works are due to commence next year with partial opening planned for 2016, and full opening planned for 2017.

Why couldn't you see the reservoirs Johnny? All of the Walthamstow Reservoirs are already open to the public and have been for a long time.
That's excellent. There is some much open space around those reservoirs that folks can enjoy!
As an aside. I was on the West Reservoir last year (I think it was last year), and went for a walk round and beyond the pumping station/café area. I and my friend had a bloke in a canoe (think Haringey version of Miami Vice) come over and rather aggressively told us we could not walk where we were. We were half way round but he made us walk back the way we had come.
Apparently the terms of use of the res' by the boating folks forbid the great unwashed from venturing past the built up area. Apparently, this is because the folks who's gardens back onto the res' do not like anyone walking there. It struck me a utterly nimby, but there may be a better reason and that may not be the whole story- if anyone knows and wants to share. Otherwise, it is such a great space, it would be excellent to open this up to folks too.... Its even close than 8 mins drive!
Oh, I opened the doc, and at 147 pages I began to regret this almost immediately. What they are talking about doing is excellent, but I was looking for a date by which this might all be achieve and opened up- any sense of that Hugh?

This is great news. One of the joys of the overground train ride from South Tottenham to Blackhorse Road is the view of the reservoirs. At last an opportunity to actually walk by them.
Wow - great picture, what a place to have on our doorstep
I think there is also going to be a nearer wetland at Woodberry Down.
Indeed there is. Read more about that via this post.
