Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)

In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.

This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.

However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!

One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000  vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.

After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. You can clearly see the details on the full size pdf map attached below.

Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.

At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

A pdf copy of the Wightman Road closure is attached, along with some Council-produced documentation. You can stay up to date with what's happening on the Wightman Road closure on a dedicated page on the council website here.

That info also needs to be put on St Ann's Road westbound by St Ann's Hospital.

With that, fewer vehicles would go up Salisbury Rd, and more would use St Ann's Rd/Harringay Rd or Black Boy Lane/West Green Rd to avoid that very congested junction on Green Lanes.

Signage (yellow with black font) at bottom of Falkland Rd is too detailed & not obvious re positioning, mentioning access to certain house numbers on Wightman. There needs to be an Access Only sign as well (red with white font).

Matt and Gordon. If you contact Haringey they might be able to sort out something out quickly. I think the are looking at this first week as a time to iron out teething problems. So pretty much open to suggestions.

Thanks Michael. Does you have name & email address?

I just rang the main switchboard number, waited until all the options were finished (it's option 9), got a human being and asked to be put through to the traffic team dealing with the signage associated with the bridge closure. You could try asking for Tony Casale who I think might be the project lead.

Matt - by any chance are you following up about the fact that there's no sign telling people no through route at Willoughby turning off Green Lanes? people are turning in at Dogtas on the southern end of Duckets common and getting trapped in a loop up Lausanne/ down Frobisher...combination of angry speeding and honking + frankly alarming multipoint turns on Wightman as they realise they can't after all turn right....

Well that's hardly surprising given that the "no right turn" sign hasn't been taken down or covered up. I just came through there. People aren't mind readers. The traffic on Green Lanes seems no worse to me between St Anns Road and Harringay Green Lanes station which says to me the bottle necks must be occurring further afield
A sack and a bit of string to cover it up? Yes, of course that's rather stupid but I also think a lot of regular drivers are on auto pilot and simply do the journey they always do and take little or no notice of signs, or lack of them.

I was just stuck on a bus going North between HGL station and St Annes Road for about 40 minutes, stood still or at a crawl, this was about 5pm. Loads of cars still going up and coming down ladder roads, these could be residents I suppose or people not knowing about the blocks yet. The Manor House junction was really jammed too. Going on the bus down GL this morning at 10am took a lot longer than normal.

I wasn't aware that the 'no right turn' from Salisbury Road onto GL has been suspended - I can't see it on the diagram either.

If you look at the right hand column of the illustration, third down, it says "The right turn bans at Hewitt Road and Salisbury Road will be rescinded"

So the right turn ban from Hewitt Road is definitely gone for the next 6 months? Double checking just in case.
