Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)
In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.
This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.
However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!
One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000 vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.
After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.
At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

It says a lot about our faith in the Council that we all assume that we will still get tickets anyway and need to consider ending up in Court defending our position. Look at Amir's recent post as to how much effort it took to challenge a "no right hand" turn due to roadworks....if you're reading, Amir, it would be good to hear how that panned out....

Mountview and Stapleton Hall Roads have now become rat runs for traffic heading south. Earlier on I also saw a considerable increase in the amount of northbound traffic coming up Oakfield Rd from Upper Tollington Park - so much for the no entry signs.

Well if they're monitored by fixed cameras people will look and learn.
If it's an occasional council Smart+CCTV car, people will also look and learn.

I haven't seen a cctv camera car for some time. I seem to remember they are now banned.

No they're not, I was caught (correctly, banned left turn) in Waltham Forest about a year ago. Certainly Islington still have them. And the clamped/lift lorries for Haringey have cameras mounted on all four cab corners.
Be afraid, be very afraid.... ((unless a Lotus numberplate is so low to the ground it can't be read).....

Traffic has eased considerably now that the rush hour (s) is over. A trip down to the junction of Oakfield Rd and Upper Tolly tomorrow to see if there is actually a no entry sign for northbound traffic.

No problems this evening with rat run traffic down Stapleton Hall Rd, perhaps yesterday's problem was down to a different problem - I wonder what.
Couldn't see any no entry signs at the junction of Oakfield and Upper Tolly and cars etc are coming through. I feel sorry for all of the drivers stuck in the continuous non-moving queue from Stroud Green Rd down to Green Lanes

The Site Admin has said this elsewhere but can I make a plea for a little tolerance and understanding of views being expressed here. For many people living on the Ladder, especially those on Wightman Road, this might be the first time in many, many years they have been able to sit in their homes without the constant roar and shake of traffic. For others the situation is a royal pain, causing huge disruption to their work journeys or daily routines. Both sides of the argument are right.
When I moved to Warham Road 30 odd years ago, it wasn't like it is now. Kids actually were able to play in my street. But the ad hoc approach to addressing traffic problems, from the gating of the Gardens to the blocking of Hermitage, has brought levels of traffic that have become intolerable.
I really do believe that it will get better over the next week or so. The contact I have had with Haringey officers today has been genuinely helpful and they are completely open to hearing about problems and addressing them.

With the notable absence of either an email address or direct telephone number at the Council in their letter I have to disagree. How hard would it have been to set up a generic email address for us to direct enquiries to?
