Dear councillors ... please organise for a CLEAN Green Lanes!!
Green Lanes does not have to look like this. The so-called re-development hasn't even finished & it's already filthy. Why?
Why isn't Veoila down to do this at least weekly?; (from this post)
So Dearest councillors can you pretty please find out for us what is going to be done to rectify this quite unnecessary situation ... and let us all know here? Ta

Easy! The first three pics are taken in a rubbish Labour borough (Haringey, init?) and the last one, where the pavements are benefiting from a good hose, is taken in our (Conservative!) flagship, Westminster. Vote for rubbish? Get rubbish - bags of it!

Westminster is famous as the borough that introduced nightly hosing down of all pavements and shop doorways, as their solution to the problem of rough sleepers.

I have emailed all three councillors for their points of action (ie. approaching the council officers responsible & Veolia) to see what system will be put in place to keep these streets clean). There probably isn't a spray cleaning regime in place under the current contract .... bizarrely). But yes the traders need to be held accountable as well.

There are 9 councillors - two of whom are the Councillor leader and Finance Director. Part of Harringay is in Seven Sisters ward too.

Hi Matt
Thank you for raising this. I live in St Ann's, (West Green Rd end) and have had the same problem along our "parades" (Flats above shops). I fought for 6 months to get it addressed (we're at monitoring stage with a new solution at present).
This is what I learnt:
- The Purple Bags are... the road sweepers bags... (Yes, those people paid to keep the road clean!)
- The properties above shops have no bins! They have a timed street collection. So they put their rubbish at an agreed location on the pavement.
- They have a window (i.e. rubbish out between 8am-9am OR 8pm-9pm) and Veoila are meant to be around by 8:30am or 8:30pm (this is an example)
- This means, EVERY MORNING and EVERY EVENING piles of rubbish will be on our street between 30-90mins.
I work in the city, they have the same method for businesses, only for evenings between 6:30-7pm. It works there as no one is on the street after 7pm. It is not a solution for residential areas.
That said, I have no alternative solution. I guess in the old days, people lived above the shops they owned and they had gardens. So I guess some of what you are seeing is "engineered dumping" (if that makes sense).
My Tactics:
- Take hundreds of photographs every day at different times
- Find out when Veoila are meant to come. Mine were meant to come at 8:30pm... my pics were showing they were not. Veoila finally admitted a "gap in service".
- Send those pictures daily/weekly to Councillors (Your Cllrs, Envirnomental Scrutiny Cllrs and the cabinet member), the Council CEO and Council Directors.
- It's their problem to solve - thats why they are paid.
I would like to say that the reason it took 6 months sadly, was I reported it using the app and the frontline service. However 5months into my new obsession I emailed the Council CEO who was amazingly helpful, understanding and actually just as angry as me - It led to solutions which Cllr Brabazon assisted with.

I am very aware of the issues of rubbish on Green Lanes and I continue to liaise with the council and Veolia to find a solution to this. It may be time to re-think the way rubbish is collected here but in the interim it is essential to hold the council and Veolia to account by making sure that they fulfil their contract to remove the waste through timed collections. Its not an easy nut to crack but I will keep pressuring the council to sort this out otherwise all the good work currently going on in Green Lanes will be in vain

Thank you Karen. Just to add to the issue of how/when the bags of rubbish are collected, there is also the question of why the council hasn't allowed for (at least) weekly jet washing (or similar) of dirt and grease etc from the paving along the Grande Parade. That is, keeping the pavements clean.

I think it's time to tackle the mobile diners who stock up at the restaurants, eat in their cars on the roads we live in and then dump what they don't want including food trays, cans, bottles, etc. I pick stuff up at the end of my road just about everyday.
No one seems to care including the restaurants piling it high and selling it cheap. There should be more enforcement of litter and some pressure on restaurants to start really caring for the community that lives around them.

Karen. I would be interested to know at what time rubbish that is left (in purple bags especially) is meant to be taken every day on Pemberton. How do I find this out. I often see bags left overnight and the mess can be disgraceful when the foxes get into them, especially when it is considered that hundreds of families use this space every morning to get to school. I would be happy to keep my eye on it and make a note of when rubbish is not removed...
Perhaps I need to talk to Liz to work out who to point out missed pick ups too.

Do you mean at the junction of Green Lanes (timed collections) or at the junction with the passage? Let me know and I will find out and also raise the issues here. You can point out missed pick ups to me and I will deal with them promptly.
