Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was going to put this in the Warham Residents, but I figured others who walk the Passage might want to comment

I'm talking about this one

I was discussing the narrowed crossing point with my neighbour Maggie and saying how, of all the crossing points going along the Passage, it is the one that makes me the most nervous. There is a large barrier in front of the crossing which I believe obscures the view of drivers and may prevent them from seeing smaller members of our community coming out of there (not to mention the parked cars up to the barrier). As a driver, she agreed this was the case and that she finds that this crossing point makes her very nervous.

Dumped packaging

The railing seems pointless, if its purpose is to discourage people from running across the road, as it doesn't cover the mouth of the Passage. There are no signs up warning of the possibility of children crossing, despite being the next street up from a school.

Add to that the fact that Warham Road is a rat run and cars tear up the road from the lights at speeds that would almost certainly kill a child. I helped pick up a little boy knocked down there a few months back, it wasn't recorded because the carers decided to take him home and not call an ambulance.

You will also notice in the photos the inevitable dumping that space attracts.

So what to do? Let's design the problem out.

How about replacing the barrier and bollards with planters on either side, removing the railing which serves no purpose and dropping the kerb slightly to the left as in Pemberton Road/Mattison Road so that the way is blocked by a planter. We could get a Making the Difference Grant for the planters and get some input from highways to help move the kerb.

So what do people think?

Thanks Dan, that's fab!
Great stuff - it's definitely the bollards and the railings that makes it currently look very 'Mean Streets'
Danzigger - that looks great man !
Well done.
Fab ideas! safety for children, looks good and with a chicane it may stop the heavy trucks thundering up too. I'm up for what ever it needs. Thanks Maggie.
Just to update you all on this:
I had a meeting with the neighbourhood management team and highways and one of our local councillors at the site to discuss our ideas.

It was agreed that our ideas were good and worth trying to push forward. The rusty redundant frame on the right hand side of the road should have been removed and the guy from Highways will see about this and the missing door off the utility cabinet should get put back. As a first phase, they will get the redundant, damaged stuff removed fixed.

The railing will be sorted but we will wait to see if we can get money and the okay on the planters. Whatever happens that useless railing will be removed and something out in its place.

We are going to try and get cash from the Making the Difference fund to get planters, plants etc to build the community garden area which will happen next May. I will undertake to fill that in. If any Warham people want to get involved in raising funds or design, let me know via the mail and we'll get you on board.

What I'd like to do see is this time next year is a big bulb planting party in Warham. Let's see if we can make it happen.
Brilliant. Thanks for taking this on.

Well done Liz. I will certainly be interested in planting and upkeep

Thanks Liz, I'm happy to be involved at any level.
Just to let you know, that this project is moving forward.

We have got rid of a rusty railing so far and are now looking at the kind of planters to put there. I have posted more about it on here including links to the types of planters we've been offered. Please let me know what kind you would prefer and if there is anyone who wants to help with the gardening side of it, I would be very grateful for advice and guidance.
Crumbs, I thought that this project had been given up on but guess what, we have 4 planters arriving on Monday 22nd November and railings disappearing! They are all ours but so far we have no plants for the winter planting.

So number 1, if you have suitable plants that you could donate plants or money to buy plants please let me know.
Secondly, I am planning to have a big bulb plant on Sunday 28th November between 11-1. Come and plant a bulb (and anything else we might have collected). I'll even make tea and cookies.
Finally, they are our planters the council are not responsible for them and won't be doing any maintenance so please keep an eye on them, weed/delitter them and feel free to suggest ways to garden them.

These planters are not only for Warham residents but for anyone who likes to have a bit of a garden. Feel free to get involved.

A huge thank you to Marcia O'Connell at Neighbourhoods who took this project and kickstarted it back into life after the hiatus caused by purdah etc.
This is such good news.

I'll be up North next weekend but I'll bully David into getting his hands dirty
Thanks!
If you've got any suitable plants in your garden we could take cuttings from, that would be good too
