Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm just wondering how other people browse this board. I've always found it very difficult to use as the threaded nature means that new posts can appear anywhere in a discussion which is pretty difficult with a multi-page discussion where the most recent posts appear halfway through the total posts.

As such, I only really look at the last few posts on the front page (although even clicking on those is no guarantee I'll read them as you get taken to the front page of a discussion rather than where the post is).

Am I missing something, is there an easy way to use this board?

Do you have any control over the layout Hugh? Might be useful to have a page dedicated to Latest Activity (rather than just a panel of it below the Latest Posts on the Home Page), especially if it allowed you to display more items on the page.

I see it's been discussed then.

This is probably the only board I use in this style and it probably favours those who post a bit more who can keep up and it also favours the community idea of conversations spouting off at a tangent.

It's ok on smaller threads but I find it difficult on the larger ones, although knowing to click replied makes it a bit easier.

Hugh, didn't it used to be only people in the designated area of hol, were allowed to join. The fact it has grown so much, is that because the area has extended or can anyone join
It's always been open, Tigha. The primary focus is still Harringay, but all of our local lives extend beyond the hood so I'm not precious about where people live.
Tigha, one of they earliest people to sign up lives in Berlin (hi Stephen). I think we get some fantastic posts from people outside of the immediate area, like a recent one about the Hewett family from a member in Australia.

Ho ho ho.. don't get me on that one tigha..

Let's just say Harringay's borders have become more fluid. All encompassing like Hitler's Großdeutches Reich and Putin's Old Mother Russia before it.

I mostly agree with you Andrew

I prefer the threaded style but I agree that it is currently very difficult to follow. It would be greatly improved if the whole comment section is on one page, and most importantly if you could minimise threads that don't interest you, instead of having to flick through multiple pages when there might only be 1 or 2 actual threads. When some people get going on a discussion that has no relevance or interest to you you have to "find" the end of that discussion by going to different pages, which is fiddly.

I know exactly what you are saying about how "prominent" or vocal members can just take control of a whole page, drowning out alternative discussions. It has put me off posting in the past, though I still regularly visit the site for information.

Thanks for all the comments. They are genuinely appreciated.

Sadly, I don't have much control over the forum layout. I can choose flat or threaded, but that's about it, I'm afraid. Believe me there's a lot I would like to change about the way the site is constructed, but sadly none of the work would be free.
