Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Artists' creative use of vacant shops brings life to desolate high streets

Artists have begun 'colonising' free space in high street shops left by the recession. The data company Experian estimates that around one in six shops will be vacant by the end of the year.

What a wonderful opportunity - almost a shame we don't have as many empty shops as Crouch End. I wonder if a David Lammy approach might convince Paul Simon to allow to use that long-empty shop next to Tesco's?

I was listening to some of the artists that are doing this talking on Radio 2. They make a convincing case for regeneration and making the neighbourhood more desirable by their presence. Shops that have had no one in them for a long time and are allowed to become derelict have a detrimental effect on the surroundings. The place next to Tesco would be a wonderful place to start and might allow estate agents a few brownie points round here for a change.
What do local artists think? Would you be interested in a 'squatters gallery'?
I think this a fantastic idea. A few months back, a couple of artistically gifted friends of mine were made redundant, hence had some time on their hands to indulge their creative talents, while jobhunting. It gave them focus, and helped to stave off crippling depression in one of them. The problem was space. Allowing artists to use empty commercial space, free of charge, to create art, not only stops a neighbourhood from becoming a bleak landscape and allows artists to get their work seen and hopefully sold, but could keep someone sane in uncertain times. Should this become a possibility for GL, very happy to help get it off the ground.
I've dropped David Lammy's office a short note to see if it's something they might be able to help on.
Thanks Hugh - look forward to his thoughts.
YES PLEASE!!! I co-run a gallery over in the Arena estate behind Sainsburys, and it'd be super easy for us to install something in a shop on Green Lanes. We've thought about it but not known how to go about it.

In the meantime, PLEASE come see the show we have on now, it's wonderful :)

This is a GREAT idea. I'd also love to get involved in something like this. Hey, Lauren!
Replace some of the empty shops with an assortment of different gallery spaces - I think it would liven the culture up a bit :-)
Hi Hugh,

This is a great idea, and one I was discussing with some artist friends in Crouch End a few weeks back (Woolies being in the back of my mind...). I hadn't seen the Guardian article so thanks for that.

I will be raising this with the relevant colleagues in the Council's cabinet to see if we can have some serious thinking on this.

Thanks Matt. Will you get back to us all and let us know the outcome?

Hmm Hornsey Journal covers this story but its about Crouch End!

Let's hope Green Lanes doesn't get left out of this intiative. We have empty spaces and a rich seam of local artists too.
The story is about a councillor supporting the initiative for Crouch End. I just wish we had a councillor going in to bat on behalf of Harringay.

It shouldn't be an issue that our councillors are unaware of. This discussion has been up here for two weeks now and the only councillor to comment is Matt Cooke (none of the six from either of our wards).
