Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Walking back from Sainsbury, along Green lanes just near stanhope Gardens, I saw yet another person throw something on the ground yet they were right by the litter bin by the bus stop. It was one piece of overt vandalism too many. I said to him why dont you pick that up and put it in the bin just there? he looked at me as if I was mad and walked off, ignoring me. I know his face, he works in one of the Turkish shops along there. I was incensed. I picked up the said empty coffee cup and followed him into a shop and said again, why dont you put it into a bin? why are you treating this place as a open dustbin. Nastily, he said get out of my way, it;s not your problem, it's mine. I retorted, it is my problem. I live here, I am sick of people dropping litter and not caring about it, why doesnt he take it with him. He pushed past me very annoyed as by now people were looking at him. That was the whole idea, to shame him for his action.
I said I would be reporting him. but to who? where? HOW do we deal with such people who dont care at all about making the place a mess, every day, every hour. The council could sweep those streets 20 times daily but the root of the problem is this attitude of, I dont care. I can do what I like. If can drop anything anywhere anytime.

I am on the verge now of making plans to leave Haringey, I am so sick of this constant rubbishing. I cant confront everyone, that would be a full time job and sooner or later I would get my head kicked in, arrested for harassment or locked up as mentally unstable. How do we get at this problem?
nice to see you all at HoL drinks the other evening.

Oh that's easy, tell us which shop he works in.

Good on you BTW.
He seems to float between the turkish music shop by the bus stop and also the internet cafe. His stomping ground generally between Harr G Lanes rail station and Barclays bank. He is a well dressed, well turned out tall middle aged man. thanks for your support
Ruth, you know you have my sympathy. My confrontations with litter louts and selfish dog owners have invariably led to nasty scenes. When you do get into these arguments, it leaves you angry and frustrated. However, you may have sufficiently embarrassed him to make him think about his actions.

Perhaps we could flash mob down Green Lanes one day, perhaps dressed in a slightly bizarre manner and do this to people. Enough of us should deter too much argy bargy.

p.s. I am trying to bring a smile to your face. You know, you have the support of the majority of people on this.
Ha ha! that is great. Yes, I am smiling. I think a flashmob session down green lanes would work a treat! cheers everyone
Liz, think I'll leave the dance routine to you,

Seriously thought, well done Ruth.
When I boarded the 29 bus at Sainsburys about 4pm yesterday, there were 2 young women (about 15) in school uniforms eating take-away chicken. When they had finished, both of them dropped the boxes at my feet in the middle of the aisle. When I asked them about dropping the boxes and pointed out that it wasn't fair to others and was potentially dangerous they denied that the chicken boxes were even theirs and laughed at me. Everyone else looked away. I picked up the boxes.

There was no point in saying anything else, anyway, I was too nervous, as I wasn't sure what their reaction would be and it's not as if I would have any support from anyone else on the bus. Really frustrating and very annoying
At least you tried and you did say something to them. If more of us at least said something, it might some sort of culture of change. You never know, people on the bus might have supported you. It's about time eating food esp cooked food, on buses was banned. they managed to ban alcohol so surely this is the next logical step? the smell on tubes and buses sometimes is horrendous. Should be contact BoJo to see if he has any plans in this respect?

all the best to all of you out there who are trying in their own ways to do something.
All they did with regard to alcohol was make carrying an open container against the conditions of carriage. All they can ask you to do is get off.

I must say I hate people eating on the move but it's a bit fascist to ban it.
So called faux vigilante 'guardian angel' ?
Would be a nightmare to enforce tho was in Manchester once and late at night folks arent allowed on with open food packets. the deal was they provided late night transport but no messy chip and curry packets and it seemed to work tho I havent been there for a couple of years.
Ruth - well done! I totally agree with you, and am likely to do the same, have shouted at people for littering and spitting in the past..

Nora, excellent idea, why don't we start a littering wall of shame, and post pics of people caught in the act? We should also include dumping. Can we have a section of HoL for this?
I feel inspired now to confront other people I see doing such random acts of littering. Calmly, politely but firmly. Not sure how I'd feel about approaching groups of teenagers- that is tough but I am going to work on my technique.
wall of shame- only we HoL people would see it so not sure it would have any effect but perhaps we could present it to the council at some point and say, look, we caught all these people dropping litter. why dont you? and fine them/caution them/have a litter education programme for schools and for the local businesses on Green Lanes etc etc? A Clean Sweep drive to get to the root of the problem.
