Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Any comments for my meeting with Veolia managers tomorrow?
I have an open meeting with the area managers of Veolia tomorrow to discuss how street cleaning, refuse collection and clearance of fly tipping is being handled and also to talk about some problem areas that refuse to lie down like fly tipping by bins etc.
This takes place at 9.15 tomorrow (NEW TIME) and three Harringay councillors have also agreed to come on the walkabout. If anyone is around and wants to join in, please meet at the Umfreville entrance to Harringay Passage.
If you wish me to pass on any observations, point out any problem areas, raise any issues with them, please let me know below and I will do my best to bring your points to their attention.

Overall I think they are doing a good job. Just one thing; any chance they could start later in the morning on Saturdays with their noisey sweeper machine that's used to clean gutters etc along Falkland & Frobisher Rds. 7:30 - 8am is just a tad early! Thanks.

Ooh, thanks Liz. Any chance you could bring up the persistent problem of non-collection of domesitc food recycling?
I simply can't see how anyone but the most zealous recyclers would want to make the effort when it is only collected roughly one time out of three - and I get the impression that's a better hit-rate than many others have reported. I am pretty sure I do what we're told to do, i.e. leave the compostable bags in the larger green caddy in the front garden on a Tuesday morning, but they rarely look in it. And I'm afraid this didn't happen (to us) pre Veolia. When I spoke to a rep one morning I was told I had to 'leave it out in the street' or they wouldn't see it. This sounds a bit rubbish to me - and it's also not the advice I'd read on Hariney's website.They are also throwing our wheelie bins in the middle of the garden after collections which seems to be a common problem, so that might be worth mentioning too.
Street cleaning seems to be (slightly) better round my 'hood than it was before, so no major moans there.

An area which has got really blighted with rubbish since they took over is the railings on the right hand side as you exit the Quernmore Road exit of the Harringay rail station. I am not sure whether this is their responsibility or the railways but it was never a problem before. Now the rubbish has built up and not been removed people keep adding to it. Very grateful if you could raise the issue.

Yes, They are to be congratulated as for the first time in years I saw someone sweep the road and not only that try to get ris of some of the weeds.
I just hope they can keep it up.

Veolia have a 14 year contract which will be a saving for Haringey Council of £2m per year. The street cleaners are starting 1 to 2 hours earlier each day than they did under the previous contract. My concern is that they are now working more hours for less pay?
Veolia have taken over many park depots used by park staff and are pushing their carts through our parks but are not emptying any bins or picking up any litter within the parks. Cannot they include the park cleaning service in their contract?

Mal, You might want to talk to the park staff about this before suggesting it as the 'fix'.

I think the Park staff have already been well and truly 'fixed', Park maintenence has been cut by 51%, resulting a severe reduction in staff. The gardening service is at inadequate levels, but is separate from the cleaning service which for all the parks in our part of the borough are now staffed by just one worker, his name is Ron and he works very hard with our full support
Veolia have been given park buildings and park designated land. without being required to give anything back to the parks.

The problem of leaving purple sacks out in random spots which attract fly tipping. This photo is a few weeks old so I don't know if they have addressed this problem yet however these purple sacks were left for days right outside North Harringay Primary School and Harringay Passage which are fav spots for dumping and not too clever to leave rubbish right outside a school.

Sorry to go on, but I would also like to highlight the issue along Seven Sisters Road just North of the Hackney border. Here, a number of houses and businesses habitually use street bins for their own waste, resulting in fly-tipping.
I know that the council is aware of this problem but rather than tackling he root of the problem (i.e. notices and enforcement) they are actually making it worse by taking the side panels off all of the bins. This is done to allow those who are mis-using the bins to do so without making as much mess, because they can put the big bin bags they are depositing inside the bin (they were piling up next to it before this 'solution' was brought in).
It looks *awful* - if nothing else, it looks as if all the bins are broken and that nobody can be bothered fixing them. I'm not sure if it's any better than having fly tips piling up around the sides as before :(

Corner of Salisbury road/Green lanes is very frequently used for fly tipping (next to Ladbrokes). I spoke to the council they suggested just monitoring when it happens but I'm away quite a lot so can't note the time and I don't think it'll do much good anyway. Litter on Green Lanes is a problem but I'm sure they've heard that before. More enforcement officers to change behaviour probably more useful than more bins/clearups.
