Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A neighbouring house which is split into four flats didn't get its bins emptied on Friday, I think because one of the tenants had left a mattress in the way. The bins were full and now they are over-flowing.

Does anyone know whether the next collection will be for rubbish or just recycling, as I think we are now in the fortnightly collection routine? It will be vile for them, and for their neighbours, if it gets left for two more weeks.

Also strikes me that it might not be obvious to everyone or anyone in that house why their rubbish was missed - I think in some areas you get a leaflet saying why your stuf wasn't collected but I don't think that happens in Haringey.

I think that most people in the borough want see more recycling and are willing to do their bit but the implementation of the roll out of the new arrangements hasn't helped. I agree totally with Liz that intense face to face engagement was needed for months before the new regime, not a leaflet dropped through the door. Where we're the stalls outside the busy shops in Green Lanes, the Post Office, Sainburys? Where were there drop in surgeries for people to sort out what they needed before these monstrosities landed on our doorsteps? As was suggested several time here http://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/bi-weekly-bin-collectio...
pushing back to start date to allow real engagement would have helped this go more smoothly from the launch date. Instead we have people, just walk down any street, who haven't the slightest idea what is going on and continue as normal. The whole place looks like a dumping ground for wheelie bins. I am getting more and more angry with the way this fiasco has been handled and am seriously considering contacting the Local Government Ombudsman to investigate maladministration.
Great post Liz. This is the parking office fiasco all over again.

Still waiting for answers though Anette.

Our wheelie bin hasn't been emptied since we received it over 2 weeks ago, I can't get the lid down any more.

Just got off the phone from Veolia - apparently we "weren't supposed to use the large wheelie bins until this week" which was news to me, the only information I was aware of was that they wouldn't be collecting the green boxes any more (so what were we supposed to do then?).

Anyway he confirmed that the first collection was supposed to happen today but they're running behind schedule (due to everyone's recycling overflowing I would imagine) so it may be later today or tomorrow.

I'm on Seymour Road by the way.

You are absolutely right Liz, tongue in cheek remarks like that don’t help – the intention was not to offend.  However, I won’t apologise for providing challenge where I think it is needed.

Recognising there is a problem is the first step to tackling it and tit for tat responses don’t help – residents just want to see us get the job done.

You can rest assured that I take this very, very seriously.  I agree with many of the points you have made and I am also passionate about increasing recycling in the borough.  I personally have been recycling for years and years even back in the days when the only way to do it was to haul it all up to the supermarket recycling containers every week.

Your final paragraph is one that I also put to the cabinet member and I look forward to the response here but I will of course be following that up outside of this forum.

For the record Cllr Schmitz and I asked at the last Area Committee that the date for roll out be pushed back so that problems in the west of the borough could addressed and ironed out before phase 2 hit our area because we, like many residents, could predicted that the makeup of Harringay ward would make it a harder job to get right.

It’s week one and yes there are problems but its our job as your elected members to work towards getting it right – we will continue to do this.

Hi Katy, yes unfortunately there are 19 outstanding roads that Veolia has to complete the collection tomorrow. This includes Seymour, Hewitt and Warham roads in Harringay ward. As you have rightly quoted as people have been using their recycling bins in the last two weeks the number of trips that Veolia had to make to the incinerator were much more than they anticipated. This has inevitably slowed them down. There is a significant learning here that for phase 3 we have to ensure that there is a large print on the bin that advertises the use date. Thank you for your patience.

Trips to the incinerator? For the re-cycling? Mistake?

Sorry John, i should have clarified that they take them to materials recycling facility (MRF) near to the incinerator.

I hope I am wrong but I would hazard a guess that a lot of the collection was contaminated with non-recyclable material. Maybe the incinerator might be the best destination.

Thanks for the update.

Assume (hope) trip to the incinerator was a mistake though :)
I began this thread a few weeks ago. A neighbouring house, split into four flats, didn't get its rubbish bins emptied on the usual day. I called in, with a query about how the new system would work with homes like this (high occupancy, high turnover, landlords who don't give a crap). I never got an answer to that question but a special rubbish collection was arranged.

Here we are a few weeks later. Same house. I took this photo this morning (cant seem to upload, will do later) the day after our rubbish bins were emptied. Their bins were not, for reasons I don't know - a motorbike in the way maybe, or just because they aren't bothering with the recycling. Four bins are now overflowing, all with mixed rubbish. And two weeks to go until the next collection.

Can someone tell me how this will ever move on from here? Is there ever going to be an attempt to engage with the tenants? Or the landlord (happy to pass on the details)? Or am I going to have to call Veolia after every missing rubbish collection? What a waste of my time and, ultimately, local money.

After Area Assembly where we encouraged to report problem properties to them, I emailed Veolia about a house on my road at Enquiries.Haringey@veolia.co.uk to request a visit from the recycling engagement team to the house in question as their bins are always overflowing and their green bin stands by shiny and unused. I did it that way as I think if one asks for missed collection response, they probably don't also pass the info onto the engagement team. I did get a response but whether they will visit, I can't say. I'm guess I'll have to wait and see if there's any change.
