Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

My old aerial screwed to camera tripod contraption in loft has sadly given up the ghost.

Could anybody recommend a fantastic local aerial technician for troubleshooting/fixing a new aerial (if required) to exterior chimney stack?

As an aside, we stream 90% of the time. Anybody managing well without an aerial at all?

I've streamed live TV on my laptop before, surely we can't be far from live streaming Smart TVs (or apps)?

Would greatly improve the roofscape if such tech was made widely available.

Thoughts appreciated.

Thank you.

We used Ward, based on recommendations in this thread.  I recall the price to have been competitive with the others I spoke to.

As far as streaming live TV goes, it is worth investing in a Chromecast (or similar), which turns your TV (through your HDMI port) into a Smart TV. This falls down, however, when your internet connection breaks, which I think is why we got an aerial installed.

Thank you – didn't realise you could live stream channels with Chromecast, will investigate.

You can Chromecast through your phone for free. I use it occasionally to watch Curzon Cinema films. It can be a bit stuttery, but it's not too bad.

Thanks all.

We also used Ward.

One advantage of live TV is that you can record it & then skip through the adverts - some of the streaming services (e.g. Channel 4) have a lot of adverts.

If your quote is high, try Ben at Empire Aerials 07957 705708, very nice competent at installing aerials and satellites and fixing reception glitches. Very good, honest and reasonable, but may be busy. Good luck.

I've used Antennalink, based in Hendon  - www.antennalink.co.uk / 020-8959 7127 - both for a new aerial and for a problem with an existing one. Very efficient and price seemed reasonable, but I don't know how competitive they are as I didn't get other quotes (they were originally recommended by John Lewis, from whom I bought my TV).

I’ve just shifted around my living room, ending up with the TV far away from the aerial socket.

My plan was to just use a small computer, with TV tuners, to stream live or recorded programmes over WiFi to an Apple TV. I bought a new “HD” capable tuner to add to the old one I already had.

On a whim I tried the small magnetic aerial that it came with straight into the TV. I was surprised to find it picked up a strong, quality signal to receive all of the digital multiplexes, including HD. A colleague pointed out that when they turned off analogue transmissions they upped the power for DVB. So It’s worth a go.

Thanks James, I hadn't thought of simply using a smaller portable aerial, very good point. Shall definitely give that a go before calling on the professionals. Cheers, N.

The main transmitter for London is at Crystal Palace, but there are repeater lower-powered transmitters in some areas - the historic mast on top of Ally Pally is one of those, from which the Ladder benefits.
