Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Despite out pleas with the councillors to stage this on Green Lanes (and I'd even sent the kaftan to the dry cleaners in anticipation), the Car Free Day will be held on Wood Green High Street
From the council website
"Car stereos and exhaust fumes in Wood Green High Road will make way for street entertainment, cycling displays and information stalls at a new Car Free Day event organised by Haringey Council and the Sustainable Haringey network.

The council will be shutting the High Road to traffic on Sunday 28 September to stage the event, which marks an annual International Car Free Day to promote alternative transport.

Residents and shoppers will be able to enjoy entertainment, music, food and drinks stalls and much more during the public event, which will run from 10am to 4pm.

They will also have the chance to try out cycles and find out ways they can help improve the environment through information stalls from community and environmental groups, the council and Transport for London, which is helping to fund the event.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:

"Part of our new Greenest Borough strategy will involve trying to convince residents that there are good, practical alternatives to travelling around by car.

"The Car Free Day will give people the chance to see what Wood Green High Road would be like without the vehicles that stream down it, as well as learn more about what they can do to improve the environment for future generations.

"I hope residents from across the borough will come down to the High Road, have a good time, and hopefully take away a little bit of inspiration to join us in trying to make Haringey the greenest borough in London."

The road closure will be in place from 7am to 8pm between the High Road's junctions with Turnpike Lane and Gladstone Avenue. Details of diversions will be announced by Haringey Council nearer the time.

It is the second time that Haringey has marked Car Free Day, which was originally launched by the European Union in 2000."

Read Clr Haley's comment and then be afraid, very afraid Wightman Road residents

As Liz says, a test of what happens to Wightman Road (and the ladder rung roads) when the High Road is shut ... Would be nice if we could have a way of quantifying the impact - but no idea how, short of spending a few Sundays before and that Sunday counting cars on Wightman road!
I am vaguely involved in the organising this event - if you have any ideas of what you would like to see in the way of entertainment on the day, please let me know.
Could we have you wandering around as a 'community clown' Adam. I'm sure the kidz would love it.
Maybe if we all get in our cars on 28th Sept and create gridlock on the ladder ? :-)

Will the buses be running down Wightman Road ?
I am sure everyone on this site will join with me in hailing the breathtaking vision of Councillor Brian Haley's BIG IDEA: "Part of our new Greenest Borough strategy will involve trying to convince residents that there are good, practical alternatives to travelling around by car."

May we look forward to having all 625 HOL members who voted so fearlessly in our recent Petition massing in their serried ranks between WIGHTMAN/ALROY ROADs' junctions with Turnpike Lane and Endymion Road from 6.30am to 8.30pm on Sunday 28th September, to ensure the successful implementation of our Great Green Environmentalist's Euro-wide vision? The watchword is: 'NO PASARAN!'. And, Adam, 'No Fraternising (however vaguely)! Any entertainment will be on a car-free Wightman Road.
for the record, this event is being organised by Haringey in conjunction with a broad coalition of voluntary groups including, Sustainable Haringey, Living Streets and Haringey Cycling Campaign. Hope to see you all there.
Looking forward to it, personally...
I'm looking forward to it too, hope my previous comment doesn't sound too grumpy and begruding, that wasn't the intention. Adam - do you know anything about what sorts of things are being planned?

What about a slow cycle race, one for adults and one for kids? Fixies not allowed!
Don't get me wrong, I think the idea, a sort of 'establishment' Reclaim the Streets, is great and was a very enthusiastic supporter of this for Green Lanes

I think I was more disturbed by the comment "give people the chance to see what Wood Green High Road would be like without the vehicles that stream down it," from the Councillor, the wording of which suggested a 'softening up' process to the idea that we petitioned against recently. Or am I being overly distrustful of politicians who after all are usually honest chaps who like to tell you up front exactly what they are planning, consult fully and abide by the majority decision?
No Liz, you're not being overly distrustful at all. Nothing whatever wrong with a Car Free Day - it's just the use our good Councillor H. is obviously already making of it as a dry run for part of THE GLOBAL PLAN for Wood Green. So folks go along and enjoy it - if we don't see you on Wightman Rd on 28/9 I'm sure we'll see you "having your say", as they say, in November's 'Haringey People'.
Are you serious about gathering on Wightman Eddie?
I really am, Hugh - as are a few folks at tonight's WRN4RA meeting. It's something I'd be keen to canvass on 'Friends of Wightman Road' - unfortunately not yet on site - with a view to pushing it fully at our next Area Assembly mtg on 1st September - to guage the response from all Cabinet Members & Cllrs, including Brian Haley.
I recognise it could be somewhat divisive, and I appreciate Adam's point.

Smthg entirely different! As a trueborn native son, I hope you watched Guyana's Jungle (Lost Land of the Jaguar) on BBC1 this evening. Alas, my RA mtg prevented me. Continues next Wed - the jungle jaguar, not the meeting.
