Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is it me or does the recently made-overed bridge welcoming the world to Harringay/Haringey as you come along Green Lanes passing the Arena look disapointingly crap? There was some article I read somewhere congratulating the team in the council who had spent all their creative energy and our money on the new look bridge. Admitedly its an improvement from the graffitti and bird shit that used to be there but they simple covered the graffiti with what looks like a grey net curtain. I've always thought that a mural of fruit and veg of vibrant colours would be much more inviting and reflective of Green Lanes don't you think?

I do think that the bridge does lack something. Something more colourful and inviting would be a good idea.

I was present at the press launch.
I was very disappointed. Not much better than the graffitti.
Something tasteful with some style would have been appropriate to say something good about the area.
Not into colourful or murals though. Too much like graffitti

A discussion started a few months ago also commented on the fact that the bridge welcomes us to Green Lanes and not Harringay which is only mentioned as an afterthought. It is not a gateway to green lanes which is a v long road but a gateway to Harringay and should say so.

Graffiti?? I was thinking more along the lines of retro 1950s stylie brightly coloured water melons, bananas and tomotoes, auborgines, pinapples etc. Done by a professional artist. I wasnt thinking of a spray paint job. We want to get away from the scruffiness of Green Lanes don't we?

No fruit and veg!
The idea is to reflect Harringay, not the half a dozen shops that sell tomatoes and oranges. Historical images, pix of the Salisbury, work from local artists...something like that, otherwise people will continue to equate the whole of Harringay with a few shops on a main road we are so much more than that, as we now know from this site!

Yes, I agree Liz, I suppose what I'm really wanting the bridge to portray is a vibrancy, a colourful inviting something or other. You're right, Harringay is so much more than the fruit and veg shops but food is definately a theme around here isnt it? There's plenty of room on the bridge I reckon for historic pics and places of interest with a few melons thrown in on the side. Obviously we are in the realms of fantasy here, because we're probably stuck with the current ugly green netting. Ben, if we take that off what have we got underneath it? Generations of bird shit and grafitti?

there must be some logic behind this nett curtain business. You say its cheaper to clean it. If thats true, the council, in the pursuit of cheapness at every opportunity, would have gone for that option. But perhaps the net curtain saves them having to even clean it! The curtain must be a bird/graffiti repellent. But if they can get words onto this net why cant they add pictures and colour with no need for words? Just because the council have written 'welcome to haringey' in several different languages doesnt prove to me, they actually mean it.

Can the net be re-sprayed with another mural on top? Something with more colour? photoshop, etc. has come on a long way still perhaps the original banner was made?

This quote is from a letter to a member who submitted a proposal to commission some better banners from local artists using the Making the Difference money. So I think the answer is no. Grey/Green, corporate, dull...and wrong, seem to be the preferred choice of those who make our decisions for us .

How about a sign saying "Welcome to Harringay - drop litter and you will be tied to the tracks above"
