Gating the Ladder
How would you feel about gating the passage ways of the Ladder? I could be completely wrong (as I don't use the passageways) but it appears to me that there are more costs than benefits to having free access to passways. They are poorly overlooked and offer too many opportunities to a criminal - no escape routes for victim in the passage way, quick escape route for criminal from street. These areas could be kept for wheelie bin storage or something more creative instead.

I am now imagining disgruntled residents in a secret control centre, watching the pitbulls in the passage and shouting at the hoodies, scaring the life out of them.

That was meant to read;
'We could do Dalek voice overs'.
But anyway, little hats & face paint, I'll just add those to the list and pass them on to the officer.
This might make ladder folk look a tad eccentric but never mind. Before we know it the Home Office will be extending 'people's night watches' across the country. Criminals beware! -

Harringay Safer Neighbourhoods team have examined the issues from both sides and feel that each argument carries equal weight. We can see that total gating of the ally way would be unfeasible due to expense. But a strong argument could be made to gating off short sections of the passage, which due to their design are crime or dumping hotspots.

Thank you, Glyn, for bringing us back to the point. I would still oppose gating. If we know the hotspots, then some high profile prosecutions might persuade people that something will happen if a crime is committed. Could be an interesting subject to discuss at the LCSP meeting next Thursday given the strength of feeling expressed on this post, don't you think?.

Coincidentally enough I received a leaflet through my letterbox today which is all about how keen the two Lib Dem councillors are to ... clean up the Harringay Passage.
While responsiveness to issues animating local residents is very nice to see, it would be easier to take this seriously if it hadn't been accompanied by a second and much more poisonous piece of Lib Dem-sponsored bumpf through the letterbox. A Daily Mail-esque headline screaming KEN'S CRIME SHAME led this new London resident to assume Ken Livingstone had just been discovered actually committing a crime. When of course it is just a tabloid way of drawing attention to the fact that the Lib Dem mayoral candidate is a former policeman.
Whether or not one blames crime rates in London on Ken Livingstone (& I don't know enough either way, being a newcomer to the city), this is dodgy and disappointing attack politics from a party I associate with moderation, not overblown rhetoric. Honestly - "KEN'S CRIME SHAME", "London NHS UNDER THREAT", "FARES SHOCKER"?? These headlines belong in a discourse analysis textbook, not on something that is attempting to get people to vote for the party coming out with them!
ahem ... rant over ... we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming about ways to clean up the Passage.

Yes, I agree Liz. My point was that after seeing the thing attacking Ken Livingstone it was hard not to wonder whether this we're-interested-in-cleaning-the-Passage-too leaflet was also a piece of cynical manipulation rather than a signal of genuine commitment. And I posted my reaction here in the hope that these councillors - who, if they are actually interested both in cleaning up the Passage *and* keeping their finger on the pulse of what people say on this site, are to be applauded - might take this back to Lib Dem HQ and stop them printing out foolish and patronising tosh.

I think it's unfair to criticise the Lib Dem leaflet based on the fact that it reads like a tabloid. According to readership data 44% of adults read the Sun, Star, Mirror, Mail and Express, compared to just 12% who read the 'quality' dailies. So it would be a poor way to reach voters to distribute something that read like an FT opinion piece.
As a Lib Dem supporter, I am actually very glad to see them representing themselves robustly against the virulent attacks that are constantly made by the right-wing press and the other parties.

As it happens dealt with a person carrying out a criminal act this evening. Won't go into the details suffice to say it wasn't particularly nice and the person ran off .... down the passage. After getting the answerphone on the SNT mobile again the 999 car came, only to find that they were dealing with another passage getaway.
