Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

You may have noticed a certain lack of progress with finishing the works on Green Lanes. Well, this time round we can't look to blame thee Council or TfL. Apparently, we're waiting for a shipment of granite to arrive from China and it's being repeatedly delayed.

Granite from Devon, Cornwall, Scotland and Ireland paved the streets of London and dressed many of our major buildings so why are we shipping it all the way from China to do the same job.
A quick phone call revealed that we do still quarry and make granite paving in the UK and it is produced in quarries where regulations are strictly monitored and where consideration is given to environmental issues.
For example "......yield rates from De Lank are high, 3,000 tonnes of dimensional stone achieving 8,000 sq metres of sawn slab - this means that our prices remain competitive and sourcing in the UK negates the carbon footprint of imported granite. The De Lank site is also completely self sufficient having its own water source that is continually recycled and generating its own electricity which is also supplied to the national grid... we are truly the ‘green’ solution to your architectural needs."

I'm not on some 'buy British' campaign, I just think that if a product is made relatively locally, issues such as carbon footprint and working health and safety regulations etc should play a part in tendering before ordering materials from the other side of the world. http://www.eldis.org/go/home&id=36044&type=Document#.U2zFQ3...
If these paving stones are damaged will they send out to China for replacements? Buying the cheapest is not always the most economical as shown by the present delays.

Everything comes down to cost! Carbon footprint, quality control and supply chain goes out the window.

It might not be ECOnomical to buy from a British firm if it costs too much and that money Is spent unwisely, no one has any damn idea if we don't attempt to have a sustainably priced market.

If the British worker goes out and buys seven cats with that extra money, the real cost is hundreds of dead birds plus the possible cost of an animal sanctuary dealing them if the owner gives them up one day, so if that's not factored into the price by tax, it's not possible to get near to understanding the true 'cost' of anything.

Capitalism is a mess at the moment.

I'm sure Aberdeen ( The Granite City ) could have supplied 20 or 30 paving stones, probably free of charge )

To be fair, I doubt if the Council actually specified Chinese granite - that decision would be made by the company which got the contract.

This whole regeneration process has been absolutely pisspoor, the place has looked like a post-apolcalyptic wasteland and the area you show by St Anne's road is downright dangerous. I was excited about the regeneration but dismayed by how it's been run. And I agree, the cycle racks are weird and awful looking. But I'm pleased we have some!

A: Hi, I have a contract for 40 Sheffield Stands for the Green Lanes Regeneration Project. Can you Supply? How much are they?

B: Yes we can supply. They're £40 each.

A: £1600!? Ummm, let me get a few more quotes.

A: Hey Barry, it's me George. I've got a contract for 40 metal hoops suitable for cycle stands. How much?

C: You want them cheap or nice?

A: Cheap as you can do.

C: OK, I can do some crap ones for £8 each.

A: Marvelous, I'll take 40.

Update, apparently each bicycle stand on Green Lanes (and there are about 100 of them) cost £235. I guess they had to make sure they used up the cycling budget for the project and couldn't spend it on anything else, like a cycle lane...

I'm guessing (hoping) that that also involved fitting and various other things as a Sheffield stand costs about £30

No it didn't. Just the stands. Each.

Beggars belief. The whole paving slabs 'regeneration' beggars belief. That money could have been spent in so many more worthwhile ways.

Where did the £235 come from? If that's true then someone has made £25k or so out of these which has worked out very well for them.

I've used them a couple of times. I'm not sure but that could have been when I got a scratch on my frame.
