According to Haringey Council, there have been just 22 complaints about the smoke from Green Lanes restaurants since January 2023.
22.
So what are we meant to believe—that residents have only been affected 22 times in three years? Anyone living nearby knows that’s nowhere near the reality.
The truth is simpler: the problem isn’t rare—it’s underreported.
And here’s the frustrating part: instead of proactively addressing an obvious, ongoing issue, the council relies on complaint numbers logged through their system. No report = no problem, as far as the data shows.
That means nothing changes unless we act.
Yes, reporting is inconvenient. But right now, it’s the only mechanism they’re paying attention to. If we don’t use it, the situation continues unchecked.
So next time you smell smoke or fumes from the grills, take 30 seconds and report it:

Smoke like this isn’t just unpleasant—it can qualify as a statutory nuisance and has real impacts on health and quality of life.
If you’re affected, don’t ignore it. Don’t assume someone else will report it.
Log it. Every time.
Because until the numbers reflect reality, nothing will change.
It’s time for Haringey Council to stop relying on silence as evidence and start protecting the people who live here.
Clean air isn’t a luxury. It’s a basic right.
People over profit.

It’s barmy Alice. If a neighbour was burning noxious waste in their garden every day no one would hesitate in taking action, but when it’s a business…
Hi Alice and Michael
Anna and I have asked residents to report it as it counts as a statutory nuisance and must be investigated. We both agree this is essential and the volume of complaints will make a difference.
As councillors we are pressing hard on this issue - reporting really will make a difference.

Actually I didn’t know you could report garden waste
burning. I will now. Half the time the weather is nice someone ruins enjoyment by burning stuff and it blows down the channel of the gardens on the Ladder. The problem is I can rarely tell where it’s coming from.
