The Lib Dems committed suicide in the Coalition where they demonstrated that any and all policies would be torn up to get a seat in Cabinet and a fancy chauffeur driven ministerial limo. Only a Labour vote can get rid of the Maybot.
This fairy tale, mostly spread by the U.K.s truly democratic press, should be nipped in the bud. It's all part of demonising coalitions, which are, in fact, the most democratic form of government enabling governments to be made up of more than 50% of the vote, rather than 30 something percentage that the current rabble have.
At the time, Labour refused working in a coalition with the Lib Dems. So should've the Lib Dems, as candidates for government, just have sat back and done nothing? Would that have been best for the country? A catch22 situation.
All votes, regardless of for whom they are cast are equal. Lib Dem votes are just as valuable as Labour or Conservative votes, so why shouldn't the Lib Dems have gone for power.
What would you, as a candidate, have done?
The libdems campaigned to the LEFT of the Labour Party in 2010 and then went into coalition with the Conservative Party who were to the RIGHT of Labour. Is it any wonder that they were crucified in 2015?
As far as I recall it was Nick Clegg who refused to be in power with Gordon Brown. There was certainly no refusal to form a government from the Labour Party anyway.
Yes, there was.. Gordon Brown said no. The LDs were entitled to campaign for what they wanted.
As I said.. you have to get over this outdated undemocratic, one party government with 30+ of the vote, illusion. It causes more harm than good. The country continually swinging to the extremes, with no more than four years concerted policy for the future (nothing happens in the last year of government).
It's a real piss, when both the U.K. and U.S.A., the self anointed perveyers of democracy since 1945, have outdated, illogical and undemocratic voting systems, that don't count votes equally.
Hmmh, my perception was different, but perhaps I watching from the sidelines..
Perhaps Brown said he wouldn't go into a coalition unless he could remain top dog, which as we all know, would have been impossible. He wasn't operating from a position of strength.
I think I did that..
Perhaps you should do the same about your posting of envy..
The same old rubbish about ministerial cars .. yawn.
And you still haven't said what you'd have done in that situation.. Criticism is cheap..
Did Dianne Abbott teach you Maths, John? :) The numbers simply were not there...
