Fatal traffic accident on Green Lanes?
In another post a few days back Glyn from SNT mentioned that there had been a fatal traffic accident on GL - pedestrian and articulated lorry he said.
Does anyone know what happened, or whereabouts?

But why are we crossing Green Lanes like a bunch of lemmings? One reason I can think of is that there is an incredible long wait at the zebra crossing near Yasars. I've seen plenty of people (myself included) thinking that its ok to cross when the lights have finally gone red on Green Lanes not realising that we still cannot cross because now we have to wait for the traffic coming from Salisbury Road for a further 5mins.
I don't see why the cars have to get onto Green Lanes via Salisbury road, why not from St Anns?

I don't know if other people have noticed, but the sequencing at the Yassar Halim crossing goes funny now and then. What usually happens is the lights stop the north and south flow on Green Lanes, there's a crossing period, then the lights change to release the traffic from Salisbury Road . On quite a few occasions I've been there when it goes straight from stoppingthe Green Lanes flow to starting the Salisbury Road flow, with no pedestrian interval - and I have been caught out by it.

Incidentally, I saw the paramedics arrive to attend the poor guy and some idiot attempted to record their efforts on his phone. Shocking stuff. A policeman noticed him jostling for a good view and went ballistic, making him delete it. A very depressing episode all round.

I've noticed this too with these lights. I assumed there was a fault but I've not noticed it since - is it still happening?

Yes Michael and Alison. I had this same experience at that crossing on Friday afternoon last. In fact I think at least two 'pedestrian intervals' were missed out in succession.

We ALL know how dangerous crossing the road is, As a Bus Driver I KNOW how scary it can be, the way pedestrians feel that holding up their hand whilst they cross the road Dangerously can stop them getting hurt. I may stop but its the other vehicle overtaking or undertaking me that may not stop. Me allowing you to cross dangeously Could be causing you More Harm than you think. And as for pushing out your pushchairs between parked cars Thats Just CRAZY. We Need to remember the GREEN X CODE.
I saw the driver of the Lorry (the man who died, died because he was impatient to cross, basically in a hurry to die, because of this he never reached his destination). He was broken and he'll have to live with the fact that someone died because of him but IT WAS NOT HIS FAULT.

I feel the whole tenor of this discussion (well most of it) is how dreadfully pedestrians behave and how can we stop them (by, for example, fencing them in !). Why not turn it on its head and think - how can we stop traffic treating it like a motroway through route when clearly it is a busy shopping street full of people on foot? If there were warnings that pedestrians in the area should ALWAYS have priority, this would force drivers to drive more slowly and consciously.
I am both a driver and a pedestrian - when in the car on this kind of street I always stop to let people cross even if this holds up the traffic behind, or if I am turning in or out of a junction. I don't find this significantly lengthens my journey or causes danger, though it clearly irritates some of the speed merchants behind me. When I am a pedestrian I object to having to walk two blocks to the crossing, press the button and then wait five minutes while traffic flows past, just to get to the shop across the road. Change the priority and you will change the behaviour.

Why should pedestrians have a priority to cross a road at any point they feel appropriate (however dangerous) when there is a green light showing for traffic?
Green Lanes is not pedestrianised and has a heavy flow of traffic. As pedestrians (I am not a driver or a cyclist), we need to have some regard for our own safety. We all learned about the green cross code when we were at school. We also have to have some sense of reality ie that green lanes is a major road and that whilst it would be nice for us not to have to walk two blocks in the rain to get to the nearest crossing , that is what we have to do to cross safely.
I say this as a person who regularly runs across green lanes when i see its clear. I have no excuses for this but lethargy.
Its important that pedestrians, cyclists AND motorists stick to the rules of the road so tragedies like this can be avoided.

Of course, everyone has a responsibility to stick to the rules of the road. However, there is no law to stop pedestrians crossing the road wherever they like. Even the Green Cross Code allows for people to cross at points other than a pedestrian crossing.
There is a law which requires drivers to drive with due care and attention - sadly this law is routinely flouted and must result in hundreds of "accidents" every year.
I think that a pedestrians right to cross a road is more important than a drivers right to break the speed limit, park on the wrong side of the road, do a u-turn in the middle of Green Lanes, play music at a ridiculous volume, talk on their mobile etc.

100% agree with rahman here. And I am a driver and a pedestrian. If I decide to cross the road where there's not a crossing I am taking a calculated risk. I cannot hold traffic responsible if I decide to step in to their green light. Same way as I would expect cars to respect the green light for pedestrians.
Green Lanes is a major road, and we have to act accordingly.
Wile we're going down the oh so familiar route on this site, and just blaming drivers for the world's evils, what about the cyclists who zoom down the road with no care for pedestrians, no respect for red lights, and they're smaller, makes no sound and can be hard to see?
Oh. Can. Worms. Wide open. Worms everywhere..
My point is: We all have to be responsible, we all have to share the road, and it feels very unfair to always, always blame cars when there are other road-users that are equally to blame.
