Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My Food waste has not been collected for 3 weeks, Refuse not collected for 6 weeks. Last time it wasn't collected for 4 weeks and have had missed collections approximately 10 times in the last 18 months. It is just not on. Has anyone one else had these issues? before anyone asks, yes i have made reports about missed collections time and time again, but this problem still goes on and on.

Does anyone else think it would be better if the council took back control of waste collection instead of this third party contractor Veolia? Our council tax should not be wasted on this company.

The service you are receiving is unacceptable, and perhaps no wonder, workers are being forced onto Veolia contracts by Haringey Council, where they may only receive £8/hr, (nothing more than subsistence.) Currently workers receive £12 to £15. I have met front line staff over the years, who tell me they never received any job security while working with Haringey, shuffled with short term contracts, from Enfeild to Camden and Hackney, even Canterbury. Im surprised there are no pickets.

It would be good to return to Haringey controlling waste collection again, many businesses in Haringey get their waste collected by Islington Council including Yasser Halim, other councils are managing, why can't we provide a quality service and be fair to our workers.

Have you received any attention from your ward Councilor's with your concerns?
This model was forced into local authorities by Central govt. It was not wanted by local authorities and I believe they were even forbidden from budding themselves. It was an attempt to drive down wages and conditions as part of an overall scheme to reduce employer costs at the expense of our standard of living.

Must admit I've never had any problems - if Veolia do miss a collection, which is rare, I let them know and it's done the next day. Plus they are always very polite. I realise this isn't everyone's experience, but worth pointing out it's not all bad.

Nothing to do with it Finsbury Park Ranger  my woes are not with the recycling, Refuse is the problem and the food waste.

Food waste is taken by the recycling lorries isn't it? Seems odd they'd miss one but not the other.

One lorry for green-top wheelie bins - sorting/recycling process.

Different lorry for food waste and garden waste - composting process.

If food waste is in a plastic bag it won't be taken.

Biodegradable bags or wrap in newspaper.

Black bins are not always collected if the lid is open. Put the cardboard box into the green bin.

Your point about lid-open bins is right, but the revamped Haringey website pages on rubbish/recycling make no mention of it - I know the old pages used to do.

Hi everyone i believe we are moving off topic. My question is should Haringey take back control of waste management instead of third parties?

No.

No. But there's clearly still some work to do educating people about what to put in their bins.

In my opinion they do a great job. Never had a problem with a bin collection.
Street cleaning too is excellent. West Green Road in the early morning is disgusting but the street cleaners come down and clean it all up.
Pity the locals then throw rubbish down so Veolia have to do the same day after day.
A little respect would go a long way and save a lot of money.
