Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello Neighbours,

I live on Warham Road and I know many have had a good experience from Alan but this summer my neighbour bought a batch of fish from Alan and called me at work, talked me into buying half of it. We spent just over £100 each on mainly monkfish and some other fish. She had bought from him previously and I had sampled the fish and so it didn't seem so crazy. Anyway I stupidly paid before checking the fish out, only to discover that it was all extremely smelly and going bad. We did eat one batch and all had bad stomachs.

Every time I have called Alan he has apologised and said that it was one of the hottest days of the year and we were the last drop. He is an experienced fish seller and must have known the fish was not fit for purpose and was very pushy about selling to my neighbour. It has been almost 5 months and he has yet to come and replace and refund us, yet he promises to do so every time we speak. It's a very good tactic being so polite and apologetic and then never turning up, makes it very difficult to argue with him.

Well you learn the hard way! Do not buy fish from door to door salesmen. Pay a bit more, travel a little further and don't risk poisoning your family like I almost did. And maybe one day someone will open a fishmonger on our strip of Green Lanes.

We did have a fishmonger for a very short while on Green Lanes nr Umfreville. I think it lasted about 6 months. I think it's a difficult trade to make money from. You need fresh stock practically daily and the shelf life is so short. Tough business.

I haven't tried it yet, but there is the option of SoleShare which I've heard is good.

I was going to recommend SoleShare!  They are good.  The fish is super fresh and also ticks the sustainable, ethical boxes.  I used to pick up from Harringay Local Store - switched to Craving Coffee so they may have a space in the fridge spare now. I think they drop to Sika now too.

Steve Hatt - Essex Road, Islington.  Best fish in N.London. 4 stops from Harringay station - and on weekends too now trains run to Moorgate all the time.

Lots of good reports - just take something with you for while you queue!

Steve Hatt is great for sure, been going there for years, but that doesn't change the fact that we desparately need a decent fishmonger on Green Lanes! I love just walking out of my house and doing the local shop, but the one thing missing is the fishmonger. Maybe one day.

Good to know, I have been tempted, to be honest, sometimes by the door to door salesmen, there is something about the fact you might get a bargain price that a person can find irresistible.

There's a brilliant guy called Mark, (aka Markymarket), who, every Wednesday & Friday gets up at 2 in the morning and heads down to Billingsgate & Smithfield Market to pick up the best and freshest meat and fish, which he then delivers direct to your door (or office) throughout the day.

I've been using him for the last 3 or 4 years and he can get pretty much anything you like.

He's got a website http://www.markymarket.com/ or you can phone him with an order on 07939 526202.

He lives in Haringey, so you'd be supporting a local business too!

That sounds like a stonkingly good tip. Thanks for sharing, Simon.

Are his prices decent? We tend to settle for the Sainsbury's fare, which to be honest is very decent. I can't seem to find a decent fishmonger in the area... best I have seen is Steve Hatt but quite far off and on the expensive side. All others I have seen seem to be various shades of expensive not particularly fresh fish. Shame really given that Billingsgate is one of the largest fish markets out there and is literally 5 min from my office. I guess that's the price one pays for unwilling to wake up at the crack of dawn to buy source... or I could just go into the office really early

Just came over here to open a topic "Where do you buy fresh fish in Turnpike lane & Wood Green area?" and here you are. Thanks a lot for your tips, guys. I am not satisfied with that small market on our High Road and Wood Green shopping mall market, it looks terrible. We can't buy fish in our Sainsbury's either. So gonna try your options. If you know any more options, let us know please. Thanks.

There's Walter Purkis & Sons in Crouch End & Muswell Hill I believe...
