Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The confirmation that the two events (Wireless and the unnamed concert) are being proposed for the beginning of July will mean that large areas of the park will be out of bounds to park users from Monday 22 May right through till Saturday 15 July.  Only two days Saturday 3 June and Sunday 4 June and five days from Thursday 15 June to Monday 19 June when there is no setting up or taking down going on.

We also have a similar situation in August/September when set up starts on Tuesday 29 August and the site isn’t cleared until Friday 29 September (the date of Friday 27 October - must be a mistake?).

So large areas of the park will be out of bounds for three months this summer.

If you want to comment upon these events please note that the Council will NOT consider comments from individuals, they will only consider comments from recognised stakeholders of the park, councillors from the three boroughs (Haringey, Islington and Hackney), representative neighbourhood groups, local schools and business organizations.

If you are a member of a park user group, neighbourhood group or business organization, comments should be sent to the chair of that group. If you are not a member send comments to your local councillor, Haringey residents can find out who there councillor is at http://www.minutes.haringey.gov.uk/mgFindMember.aspx.

The deadline for comments on Rinse, Slammin and Mama has already passed however, for Wireless and the unnamed concert comments have to be with the Council before Thursday 26 January.

Now that we know the entirety of the event plans I think that people should also consider commenting upon the plans as a whole as individual events might not be a problem but taken as a series of events they could constitute a problem in terms of access to the park and noise etc.

You beat me to it! She and John Dankworth were always on the Dansette when I was growing up. No one sang scat like Cleo sang scat.

For me, Michael it is her slow ballad singing.

There's music and singers my ears may tire of. While recordings of others - distinct voices, with words and tunes of particular songs - always retain their power.
Sometimes it's delight in the phrasing of a few lines. Or it may be the beauty of a magical delivery of a few notes which make me shiver.

Though perhaps not best heard at very large events in a park.

I actually saw her at Ronnie Scott's sometime in the late 70s. I was a punk of course and that kind of music was terribly unfashionable but I didn't care one jot.

Thanks Alan and Michael. I have sent my ears for re-education.

Given the awful drainage in most of the park, coupled with our changeable London weather, can we broadly say that most of Finsbury Park is now inaccessible to the general public all-year round?

You tell that to my sons football club...

I have to remind everyone that Finsbury Park is a London Park and not exclusive to Harringay residents.. If 10% is used for other Londoners, then so be it. That's what's it's there for.  90% left for residents, that seems a fair deal to me. I wonder if when Harringay residents use Hyde or Regents or even Clissold Parks, they ever even give a thought to the local residents thereabouts. Of course they don't. They consider it their right as Londoners to use it. And so it is with Finsbury Park.

Comment moderated (paragraph removed in its entirety) due to being in contravention of our house rules

I actually agree. I think the park should be used for these events bit you've misunderstood what the ruling said Stephen. The Friends challenge was based on the fact that one of the pieces of legislation stated that events could only use 10% of the park and not be for more than six months of the year. The ruling stated that the Council did not have to stick to those limits and events like Wireless that take up considerably more than 10% (my recollection is 30%) can go ahead. They can conceivably use all the park all the year round in this way. In practice that won't happen but the Friends with their political motivations have made it so it could.

So you support these events, thought so.  Every time there is a discussion posted about Finsbury Park events the Friends of Haringey Council, Friends of Event Promoters try to divert attention by attacking Friends of Finsbury Park instead of dealing with the issues i.e. large areas of the park 40+% being out of bounds for three months; the impact on the park; the noise suffered by local residents (not just in Haringey, but also in Hackney and Islington).  Deal with these issues and if you want to attack FoFP start a separate discussion.

Yes I support these events, not because I like the events which I don't, but because they fund the entire maintenance budget for the park. The point I was making was the Friends intended outcome has failed spectacularly. All they've done is made more and bigger events possible when I personally felt Wireless plus another couple of smaller events struck about the right balance.

Finsbury Park was not given to Haringey in order to fund the maintenance budget  for Finsbury Park - what maintenance, when does one ever see a park worker - never.  FP is now being used as a cash cow to fund what?

In the 2013 Council consultation on the FP events policy the Council stated that they had an income target for 2014 of £165,000, there was nothing said about funding all of the parks.  At the Cabinet meeting in December 2013 I (on behalf of Stroud Green Residents Association) pointed out that the target could be met with just one two day concert, there was no need for 15 days of events.  Kober and Cabinet were not interested.  Subsequently at one of the Shareholder meetings we were informed that the target was now open ended, £165,000 plus, plus, plus.

With regard to the Friends action, it's all very well in retrospect to say that they had failed, but consider that they (and Stroud Green Residents Association) had tried to get the Council policy changed at the Cabinet meeting in December 2013 and the Scrutiny Panel meeting in January 2014 (a complete waste of time (3+ hours of discussion) where the councillors and officials listened to FoFP and local residents and then decided that there wasn't a problem) and at subsequent FP Stakeholder meetings.

Given that all of the "democratic" means had failed going to law was a legitimate option. Unfortunately this move was not successful.  But lets remember it is Haringey Council which is forcing through these events NOT FoFP.

Like you I could have lived with Wireless and perhaps one two day event in September, but the plans for this year are just ridiculous - a major event every fortnight outside of the summer school holidays (and thats not including all of the setting up and taking down time).
