I hope there is a good turnout.  There was a meeting with the police once on the common and the turnout for that was terrible (there was more police than attendees).

Problems in Stanmore Road / Waldeck Road leading off from West Green Road, a mixture of men from the local betting shop hanging out, often in peoples gardens, and some dealing. Very bad rubbish problem - vodka bottles, beer cans, take away wraps. Can't make the meeting.

Very well attended meeting going on at the moment. About 100 residents and a good representation from Haringey Police. MPs Lammy & West and some local councillors as well.

Pretty chaotic. It needed a firm chair. The agenda was abandoned and the meeting given over to questions from the floor, dominated by a Mr and Mrs Angry who consistently shouted down the police representatives.

David Lammy tried, and part succeeded, to hijack the discussions and blamed much of the problems on the proliferation of betting shops in the area. ( Wasn't he in the Government that instructed that Councils should aim to approve licences for betting shops ? Perhaps my memory is faulty.)

Lammy seems to believe that the park at Turnpike Lane Station is called Turnpike Common.

The police did state that they have put teams in place to combat anti-social behaviour - drug dealing and carrying of offensive weapons - in the last few weeks and explained how measures such as ASBOs and injunctions could not be imposed willy-nilly but were subject to drawn-out legal procedures.

They promised a follow-up meeting in six-months' time. Let's hope there is an effective and neutral Chair.

Much heat and little light.

Important emotive topics were discussed so it got a little heated at times but the policeman chairing the meeting did rather well, considering. He started his preamble by mentioning the HOL discussion about 'dodgy men hanging around Ducketts Common', so clearly HOL is an important facilitator for encoraging some sort of action.

It was a very good turn out. The police as usual have to deal with the bureaucratic systems at their disposal, their own, the courts & the council's. They said they work closely (daily) with the council. Someone asked exactly how many personnel the police had on their team directly dealing with the current problems at Turnpike. Apparently it is 10.

As usual, Lammy promised the world . We'll see if he keeps his eye on the ball (Turnpike Lane) or not. Someone mentioned the idea of a Turnpike Lane Area Strategy Group. Another mtg in 6 months was mentioned. We'll see.

I'd like to have got to know more from the council representative as to what sort of resources he has at his disposal to try and resolve the wide range of problems that come into his inbox. A significant number of problems mentioned on the night fell under his remit.

Both MPs were there, Catherine West as well as Lammy and a significant number of cabinet councillors as well as Gina & Zena.
