Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Rubbish Nightmare!

There is an enormous amount of rubbish being dumped around the public bin directly in front of our house for at least 5 or 6 days- 10+ bags and various other rubbish...most of which has been torn open and is spilling out everywhere. The flies are really becoming an issue; (

To add to that, we were noticing that our bins (especially recycling) are not being picked up regularly at all. In fact, my husband happened to hear the bin man and watched him- he was looking at each houses bins and skipping some intentionally. Ours was completely full and he looked at it and walked on by! My husband ran after him down the street, with the bin and made him empty it. ????? I'm starting to feel like we live in the middle of a dump.

Except only large supermarkets are obliged to charge...all the supermarkets on Green Lanes, for example, are exempt

Wherein lies the problem, but, many bags (on observation) still seem to come from large supermarket chains, ironically not from Lidl who monitor their bag sales with close scrutiny.

Having lived and worked in Haringey since the 70s, my guess is that residents in certain parts of the borough have a more environmental mindset, have more local influence, and less HMOs.

I thought central Johannesburg was bad for litter and overcrowding, but we're getting close.

I keep meaning to take a photo of the dumped "enormous flat screen TV" boxes when I next see them. I think they have these televisions in Crouch End too but it seems less acceptable to dump the boxes in the street.

If you have an oversized cardboard box you can just leave it by the bin and it will be taken. Just ignorance of the rules again - it is assumed that if it doesn't go in the bin it won't be collected which would be true of bin bags but not cardboard. It's not even clear on the website that this will happen. I emailed to ask about it.

Liz, I'm not sure that the Veolia staff collecting recycling all know this. Or if they do, whether they all follow the rules.
To me this looks like another example of people trying to do the 'right things' and not always being clear what the rules are. Seems the website needs a bit more work.

Incidentally I wonder what happens if and when the weather quickly changes and cardboard becomes a soggy mess?
