Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Every time the dustmen come they always flip the lid open on my )black) bin and have a look inside. Sometimes, like today, they don't bother to empty it. I can only think that it's because the bin isn't full enough. We already have the smallest bin available and we've never managed to fill it to the top. At the most it'll be half full. Today it only has a half black bag of rubbish in it that is now going to stay there for another two weeks. I thought the whole idea was to produce less waste? I feel that we're being penalised for doing just that.

We only generate one half-full black binliner of rubbish each fortnight. When the bin man (never seen a woman) lifts the bin lid he picks up the tied-up bag by the 'handle' and either adds it to a neighbouring not-full bin or tosses it into the bin lorry direct. Saves him time. It may be that the bag being tied up makes a difference because it's pickupable.

OK it costs us about 15p a fortnight for each bin liner but we don't get rubbish hanging about for a month. And it may be that because we're consistent in doing it that it is remembered by the crew.

All my bags are tied be they bin bags or carrier bags and I've often seen them pick the bags out of my bin but they don't do it all the time.

At the same time they took my neighbours bin that was overflowing with bin bags. I thought they didn't take bins if the lid couldn't be closed?

I thought so too! Random or what??

Not right. maybe use the Haringey app to report uncollected bin?

It's not really cost effective to send the lorry and crew out for one bag. In this case I can suffer it but I will send an email pointing out that it should be emptied no matter how full or not it is.

I've found that dealing with the bin men direct is the most effective thing to do (if you are around at the time that they collect). They're usually very accommodating if you ask them nicely. I used to get hacked off because they would leave the empty bins in the middle of the path which meant we couldn't drive either of our motorbikes into our front garden without first parking on street, getting off, moving the bins, getting back on again etc. When I asked them if they could please put the bin's behind the wall (another 4ft) they said of course and never had the problem again. I have to say I really appreciate the work our bin men and road sweepers do. Thankless job which I do try and thank them for when I can.
