A New Political Movement for the Political Centre
Moreunited.uk has just been launched as a tech-driven political startup. The organisers say their supporters include people of all political persuasions.
Their stated aims are "to give a voice to the millions of open, tolerant people in Britain who feel the political system doesn’t speak for them anymore". Whether they're taking a leaf out of the sucess book of the Corbyn camp, trying a new tack to support the UK's membership of the EU, a bit of both, or none of the above isn't clear.
Moreunited's proposition is to use "the power of the Internet to transform the way politics is funded, making it easier for moderate, progressive MPs to get elected and creating a new centre of political gravity in the UK."
Their website tell us "We are not a political party and we won't stand candidates in elections. Instead we will drive change by giving financial and human resource to candidates, from all parties and none, who formally commit to support our principles". They list their principles as supporting:
- a fair, modern, efficient market based economy that closes the gap between rich and poor and supports strong public services
- a modern democracy that empowers citizens, rather than politicians
- a green economy that protects the environment and works to reverse climate change
- an open and tolerant society where diversity is celebrated in all its forms
- a United Kingdom that welcomes immigration, international co-operation and a close relationship with the EU.
Paddy Ashdown explained on Marr's show this morning that "a close relationship with the EU" would include supporting re-entry in the event of a second referendum.
Once moreunited get to 25,000 sign-ups, they'll start crowdfunding. Too late for the Harringay by-election - but perhaps next time.

I rather think they've missed the boat on this one. It should have all the mass appeal of 'The European' and the financial success on The New Day.....

Don't we already have "centre" groups and they're sory of failures? Westminster politics is based upon opposition so we currently have a centrist government because we have a right-wing party in power and a left-wing (while JC is head of it) party in opposition.

Well a progressive lobbying and funding group that gets its money from us rather than big business interests is surely to be welcomed

I agree Michael. I'm not a party person and whilst I can see the utility of party organisation, I rather like some aspects of the idea of subcontracting a party to run a candidate for me. It's certainly a very interesting development.
