Tonight saw the hustings for the Harringay Ward By-Election. After 5 minute introductions by each candidate, questions were taken from the floor. Every candidate then gave their answers to every question, each taking about three minutes. That gave time for about four of five questions. Topics included the candidates views on homophobia, pollution caused by traffic, the management of private rented homes, and provision for autistic adults.
All candidates and their stand-ins handled themselves well.
I'd be interested to hear what others who attended thought of the evening.

I'm guessing that Billy Hole was referring (badly) to the dynasty/Venn diagram of the Adamou/Adamides/Brabazon/Stanton/Vellapah/Davies etc.

Politics tends to be that way. You only have to look at the bigger picture at a national level.
People who enjoy being involved with politics have kids that do (sometimes) and marry people that are interested (sometimes) and if you are involved seriously in politics your friendship groups will largely consist of political people because such huge demands are made on your time to leaflet, canvass, work in other elections, take positions of responsibility.
Politics is a massively time-consuming and all encompassing thing to do and, in truth, most of us choose not to do it because we know that. We also know that we probably couldn't put up with some of the internal "politics" of parties. So, I am neither surprised nor particularly outraged by dynasties - especially in a one party borough like this where if you want to succeed you need to belong.
It does make it harder perhaps for new people to break through but not impossible. I do thank all candidates for being prepared to stand up, to suffer the slings and arrows and to work for others. A lot of councillor work is casework and a good cllr is worth their weight in gold because they can give hope to people who've often given up trying to solve a problem for themselves.
I've been doing volunteer work in the borough and know how many people are in dire need even in this one ward. At this ward level, we're all on the same side in improving life for those hardest hit, irrespective of party.

I agree. When I stood for the Conservatives, people would say to me, "we think you'd make a wonder councillor but, awfully sorry, can't vote for you because you're a Tory...". Dogma and tribalism are the hallmarks most of Labour voters.

I resigned from the Conservatives following Brexit. I have always been a pro-European. I like Theresa May, though (she will live to regret making BJ Foreign Sec!).
