Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

For the second time within 2 weeks, the middle plant which I put into the bedding box attached to the Hampden Road sign has been stolen. Is anyone else experiencing this or is my box being unfairly targeted?! It makes me sad that someone would steal these.

Sorry to hear you had your plant stolen. As you will see on previous post if you searched that this is
Infortunatley not uncommon. Plants seem to Be a lucrative business for thieves!!!

Oh no. It is disheartening to hear that this is not an isolated incident.

We discussed this last night at the FoHP meeting and apparently you would not be surprised to find your plant for sale at a North London Car Boot Sale. :(

If you have invoices/receipts we can refund you. Must get that google docs spreadsheet setup to record this!

Many thanks for the kind offer John - but this isn't necessary. My mum actually bought the 2nd plant for me...to cheer me up after the first one was stolen! I'll look around for a less desirable flora. Stinging nettles?

First of all Marc, thank you very much for adopting this little planter and keeping it going. I help to maintain the big planters in Warham and plant theft is a problem.  It used to make me as mad as hell but now I just plan to out garden them!

Certain plants seem to be particularly attractive, such as geraniums or lavender (although the last time we put it in, it stayed - perhaps the thief had enough of it from us!). By the way have you looked further up the road to check if it isn't a bit of mindless vandalism? One thing possibly more frustrating is to find plants pulled up but then abandoned a bit further away (this seems unlikely in your case as the vandal would have to bend down).

I had less trouble with theft when I planted bellis, petunias, violas which are all cheap plants that people seem less tempted by but it still happens from time to time.  I also grow some plants from seeds - campanula (english marigold) will take quite well and you can gather seeds for free (there are lots of seed heads right now on Warham!) - Don't be tempted by french marigolds - they go.

It is disheartening but don't give up - I've lost count of the number of people who tell me how the planting across the ladder cheers them up so your efforts will be appreciated by the Hampden Road residents even if there is one light-fingered larry spoiling it.

It will be bulb season soon - don't buy your own, I think we'll be able to get you some from the Friends of HP to put in there in a month or two. We put in crocus, daffs, mini tulips etc. Connect with me privately and I'll let you know when we get supplies in.

Hi Liz, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I am on the cusp of moving away from the area for a bit. I'm not working at the moment and the money-well is running dry. My flat is being advertised to be let:

I am going to move back with the parents for a while. However, I will leave a bucket and my plant food - with strict instructions that the task of tending to the planter is the sole responsibility of the occupants of my flat. I am hopeful that they will be accommodating to this!

oh dont try petunias, I have had 6 nicked from my Fairfax Planter  in all . . They look colourful and can have promising buds too . They get nicked . ditto alpine type plants. Agree lavender a good one plus Vibernum G

Is it here?

I don't mean to play devil's advocate, but is it not possible, given its position, that whoever took the plants thought you were throwing it out / giving it away?

Ha, yes it is there. The errant wheelie bin was disposed of before the pot was replanted for the first time. Additionally, there is a similar planter on virtually every road on The Ladder. There is absolutely zero chance the perpetrator thought they were being thrown out.

It's locked to the street sign as well, Nick

Friends of Tottenham Green have had plants go too.

Replanted. How long do you give it?
