Hi , I appreciate this is a bit much for a 6 year old post but we live on the south side of Umfreville Road. Most of our neighbours seem to think they are responsible for the fence on the west of their back gardens. Except the neighbour on my east! Unfortunately there is no T marked on our deeds. Would it be too much of a pain to look at the ‘T’s on Umfreville Road and see if they follow the same pattern as on the picture of Allison Road that you posted?

The rules I added as a note to the end of the original post on this thread hold good for Umfreville and the whole Ladder. All householders are responsible for fences on the Green Lanes or East side, I'm afraid. The only person responsible for any western boundary fence on the south side of Umfreville is the person to the east of the former bit of passage. That person is responsible for both east and west sides. For the avoidance of doubt, a map snippet is attached (west is up. The numbers are plot numbers, not house numbers).

You're right about the ambiguity of the rear fence. Many of the streets around here had a very narrow passage that ran along the rear of all the gardens where things like bins were kept and collected so there would have been separate fences at the bottom of each garden. This has been encroached over the years but there is still the odd place you can see remaining passage ways from The Passage.
Along my road it seems that the common rule of thumb is that you're responsible for the boundary on the east side.
You could try asking neighbours how it has been settled in their properties to see what is considered common practice

Just a suggestion. If you really want a new fence it is often best to see if you can split the cost with your neighbour or in my case we agreed that I would pay for paid for it and I got the exact fence, height and style I wanted.
