Zena Brabazon Selected as Labour Candidate for Harringay By-Election
At a local Labour party meeting this evening, former St Ann's councillor Zena Brabazon has been selected to stand for Labour in the forthcoming by-election.

Completely agree. She took up an eviction issue on behalf of a friend of mine and was incredible tenacious and supportive.

She also didn't live in St Anne's but that didn't stop her representing her constituents.

There was a huge turnout at the selection meeting on Falkland Rd this evening. People had to stand and sit on floor - lots of excellent candidates so richly deserved for Zena.

In 2009 there were NINE local Labour Party members selecting the THREE candidates for the 2010 local election. Familial relations in the meeting affected the outcome.
This time around there were 61 Labour Party members at the selection and 32 of them voted for Zena in the first round. Apparently the identity and membership checks were rather tight too.

John McMullan's figures are a bit of an underestimate. Given that this is a public forum, suffice it to say that in what was a record turnout for a ward meeting, Zena won with a handsome majority on the first ballot. She is a very impressive candidate - articulate, hard-working with a wealth of local knowledge and experience gained over many years. As someone who has lived here for 23 years, I don't see the fact that she doesn't live in the ward as any obstacle to her serving and representing us well. She is extremely familiar with Harringay, knowing many people who do well, and I believe would be a formidable independent-minded advocate for the ward in the council chamber.

I'm told that she had 36 in the first round actually. Is that what you meant by under estimate? The 2009 selection is what got me interested in this stuff in the first place. Surely even a loyal Labour Party member can see that selection meetings like that are not good?
