Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

According to the Council website, Haringey have just awarded Streetcar a contract to operate Haringey’s car club scheme, which will offer members access to 41 car club vehicles at 22 locations across the borough.

More details, including a list of the 22 locations here.

They are asking for people's views on the 22 proposed locations, with extra locations being added as membership and demand across Haringey increases. The consultation will run from Thursday 15 January to 5 February 2009.

Personally think this sounds great. I have not yet pored over the 22 locations with an A to Z, but only one very obvious Harringay site (Stanhope Gardens).

I'd be interested in how the Haringey scheme compares to the standard Streetcar scheme (as this is already in operation locally).

If you have any questions regarding the scheme you can contact the transportation officer, Edwin Leigh on 020 8489 1492.

I've just emailed them at frontline.consultation@haringey.gov.uk to request a car for the ladder area, but unfortunately it looks like they have decided the car locations and that the consultation is more about acceptance of the scheme or parking spaces being taken away by its implementation.
From Green N8 out there.......somewhere:

Ham and High are doing an item on the car club story and are looking for comments from residents.
comments can be sent to Robyn the ham and high reporter RobynRosen@hotmail. com or ring her tomorrow afternoon on 020 7433 6231 deadline tomorrow afternoon.

Ham and High would also like to do a photo shoot of people next to one of the existing ‘City Car Club’ cars that operate from the new river village. If there are no takers they would use a picture of Brian Haley... Yet again....
there is a space before the com in the email address in Hugh's post
Thanks A.
Green N8 hve an interesting angle to this in their emailout last week: If you look at it the other way round, the coucil is actually giving street parking to what is essentially a private car hire company. Interesting way of looking at it I think.
Adam and Bushy's way of sharing the car sounds great. Much much better than Streetcar getting free parking and the rest of us having to pay!
I'd be surprised if the council isn't charging for this, no matter how small. As Adam & Bushy have said, their approach only works if you know each other well.

If that it GreenN8's 'angle' when I think they're being disingenuous and possibly naive.
Haringey, like most in inner London councils are trying to deal with chronic congestion and parking problems and the associated issues such as pollution and community severance - car clubs are one tool in the basket to tackle these issues. I applaud Haringey for doing this, but wonder why it has taken them so long and also question where the cars are placed - why no car for the Ladder?
Don't get the logic of these objections at all, I@m delighted Haringey are signing up to this and only wish there were more places local to me.

Certainly will be thinking about this once our car dies... (Even more after the nightmare trying to find somewhere to park on Sunday night ... )
Update:

TfL have awarded the council £100,000 to install the parking bays for the car club scheme. Currently there are 41 clubs (whatever that means) with 1000 members in Haringey.
I'd contacted Haringey to find out what was happening with this - the website said that the cars were to to be introduced in April / May - main points from the response below:

Following feedback from the public consultation, a report was compiled recommending 14 of the 22 proposed car club locations proceed. I am pleased to inform you that these recommendations have now been approved by the Lead Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Brian Haley.

The 14 locations for 27 car club vehicles which are to be installed are:
Church Road N6 for 2 vehicles
Cranbrook Park N22 for 2 vehicles
Cromwell Avenue N6 for 2 vehicles
Denton Road N8 for 2 vehicles
Hillside Gardens N6 for 2 vehicles
Langham Road N15 for 2 vehicles
Mafeking Road N17 for 2 vehicles
Priory Gardens N6 for 2 vehicles
Springfield Avenue N10 for 2 vehicles
Tariff Road N17 for 2 vehicles
Terront Road N15 for 1 vehicle
Tottenham Lane N8 for 2 vehicles
Victoria Road N4 for 2 vehicles
Winchelsea Road N17 for 2 vehicles

Signage and lining works for the car club parking bays is scheduled to commence on 1st July for approximately 2 weeks and the car club vehicles should be delivered and operational during the week commencing 13th July.

Residents within the consultation areas are to be informed of the decision to progress with 14 car club locations by letter, to be distributed on Monday 29th June and the report detailing the outcome of the consultation will be placed on the council’s website www.haringey.gov.uk , along with details for joining the car club scheme.

Apologies for the delay in implementing these car club bays. The consultation period had to be extended by an additional month and internal resource issues delayed progression of the scheme by several weeks.
.... resource issues delayed progression of the scheme by several weeks.

Par for the course really. Thanks for the update. Looks like there are 4 within easy walking distance for the north half of 'the ladder';

Langham Road N15 for 2 vehicles
Tottenham Lane N8 for 2 vehicles

Wonder which make/model will be made available ...
Not quite so great for the southern end though - I see the Stanhope Gardens location didn't get recommended (I wonder what governed which were adopted and which not?).

I don't recognise all the streets on the list but am guessing those at the southern end of Harringay will be able to use the same ones Matt suggests, or perhaps Victoria Road N4 (which is Stroud Green), though that's a bit of a schlep for me. A shame, I'd have seriously thought about taking this up in the future if there was one just a bit nearer. Maybe there will be if it takes off ...
