Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey not participating in Sustainable Communities Act - surprise, surprise

From the Local Works website which campaigns to get the Sustainable Communities Act implemented:

The Sustainable Communities Act recently became law due to a huge campaign effort by the Local Works coalition. Now that we have this fantastic new law a ‘bottom up’ process has been set up and can be used by you, your communities and councils to protect and promote local shops, services, trade and the environment, devolve powers and potentially even trigger new legislation.

However, councils must choose to use the new powers before communities can and in London so far only a handful of councils have done so. Please come to our public meeting and hear how the Act works and how you can help ensure all London’s councils choose to use it!

* Sustainable Communities Act – Tuesday 10th February 2009, The Boothroyd Room, Portcullis House, Parliament, Victoria Embankment, Westminster SW1A 2LW

LONDON wide public meeting in Westminster - Tue 10th Feb 2009

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Venue: The Boothroyd Room, 1st Floor, Portcullis House‎, Parliament, Victoria Embankment, Westminster, London SW1A 2LW

Chair: Mike Benner (CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale Chief Executive)

Speakers:

* INVITED - Hazel Blears MP (Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government) - INVITED
* Oliver Letwin MP (Chairman of the Conservative Policy Review)
* Julia Goldsworthy MP (Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government)
* John Wright (Federation of Small Businesses National Chairman)
* Hugh Lanning (Public and Commercial Services Union Deputy General Secretary)
* Ron Bailey (Unlock Democracy Campaigns Director)

It will come as no surprise to learn that according to this
this map Haringey have not opted into the Act, being content I think with their current system of neighbourhoods and area assemblies which some of us feel are dying on their feet at least around here and do not represent a bottom up process. If the meeting is not convenient (GRA AGM that night) there is a sample letter on the site to help you write to the council urging their participation.

I wrote to the Council about this back in December, but I'm afraid I've kinda let it slip somewhat though and haven't got back to them. I'm attaching the very speedy reply I got from Deputy Leader Lorna Reith. It suggests to me that maybe the whole thing is not properly understood in Haringey or at least their understanding is at odds with what we have both been told by Local Works.

On the positive side, I thought Councillor Reith's very fast response and openness to suggestions was most welcome.

At Local Works' request, I forwarded a copy of Lorna's letter to them. Their reply was:

"This is an encouraging response from Haringey but there are few inaccuracies in the letter regarding how the process works and, most importantly, they need to pass a motion resolving to use the Act by submit proposals to government by 31st July 2009. If they do this then the process is unlocked for you and the community.

Please write again saying you’re encouraged by the letter and ask that Cllr Reith or a fellow councillor please table such a motion. Attach the attached draft motion for her in your request."

So, Thanks for the nudge Liz. I have just FINALLY sent my reply to Lorna! One thing less to feel guilty about in the inbox.

I'm attaching a copy of the motion Local Works sent me.
Let's try those attachments again

There are also documents on the site that explain the process in plain English for those that are interested in finding out more.
See the event I've just added about an open meeting on this with Government ministersthis plus a useful guide to the Act.
Hi Liz,

The wheels are in motion for Haringey Council to opt in to the act after a motion was raised by the Liberal Democrats at full council on Monday, January 19. The council unanimously voted to opt in by July 31 this year. You will find details of the minutes via the council's website.

I hope this helps,
Emma
Thank you Emma.

For anyone who'd like a look-see, the Full Council minutes are here.
