If shops didn't provide them, consumers are more likely to invest in a 'bag for life', trolley or reuse an existing placcy bag. If shops and consumers took collective responsibility, we might get somewhere.

I agree. The supermarkets make this big thing about their change of policy on plastic bags, but if you actually watch what happens at the check outs I don't see much difference between the impact of their new policy and the old one, is still bags galore.
Ban 'em (or charge lots for them) if you ask me.

M&S charge 5p or 10p for a plastic bag (depending on strength of bag) just in case you've forgotten a bag or are doing an impulse purchase. The bags are hidden away though.

Just spotted this about Newington Green down the road from us, where they are trying to reduce bag use.
This post even says that they got their local Tescos not to give out ANY plastic bags during a particular week last July (which is blimmin marvellous in my experience of Tescos) and that Islington Council paid for the production of some cotton bags.
Any support for a plastic bag free week in Harringay? How could we do this?

Could do this as part of Harringay Festival week, via Dasos, the community development officer. It would need council involvement, at least for informing all shops (and there are many) along Green Lanes of the scheme.

We have spoken about this at a few Navs meetings. This is something I think that needs it's own spotlight. The shops on Green Lanes give these awful blue bags away with anything, in fact you are inconveniencing them when you bring your own bag.
Surely it would be great for us to have a shopper, we have already done a few designs and encourage shops to stock these to advertise Harringay and reduce plastic bags.

Birdy they are great. Like the 'Shop Harringay' design. Why don't you survey site members here on which designs they like to get down to one or two favourites.
Have the NAVs come up with a way to fund the production of these bags?
Also bear in mind that large retail units gave these away at first to promote the existence of these bags.

Sorry Birdy, meant to mention your great bags in my original post about this. I think we were planning on selling them - but might this be something we could apply for funds via the make the difference grant, to kick start the process and produce bags we could give away for free??
Worth thinking about - deadline for current round of funding is 31 March... More here about the grant.

Helps if the organisation applying has a bank account.
Could be something the two local schools get involved with.

HOL will soon be "official" with a constitution and bank account so that such revenue options are open to us. I think that this will "legitimise" HOL position to apply for funding.
