Does anyone know why there is a helicopter hovering around tonight or is this a normal occurrence?

Because despite budget cuts they apparently still have money to burn flying around peeking in people's bedroom windows...
It's possibly this (buzzing about just now) and if so it'll probably be peeking at the railways round here.
Good bit of detective work there Eugene. Can now see why the original post was put up. The overhead noise must have been more persistent than usual.
We should form a vigilante group to show these so called helicopters what for !
Or even feline helicopters? Michael
Remember the pictures you guys posted last week that you thought was part of Obama's contingency in London? I think they're the new replacement for helicopters over cities. When I was young I wanted to be a helicopter pilot and I learnt lots about them and got a scholarship to learn to fly with the RNZAF. I read everything there was about how you should fly a helicopter and what was dangerous about them. The bolt that holds the rotors on to the helicopter is called the Jesus Bolt. Everything I read said that you should only hover at a height where it was either low enough to land from or high enough to dive into some forward momentum so that you could auto-rotate and land. One of the things that shocked me about coming to London was the sight of helicopters regularly flying over the city just for surveillance. I was told that they were too dangerous to fly over built up areas regularly as there were too many single points of failure. When the helicopter dropped on top of the night club in Glasgow I wasn't surprised.
Helicopters rarely hover over built up areas. You can tell that even when the police helicopter is focusing on a specific location they will orbit around it rather than remain stationary. It's also very inefficient in terms of fuel use compared to forward flight.
