The railway line than runs east-west through Harringay was closed this weekend as work started on the line's electrification.
Those living on Endymion and the south side of Umfreville may have heard this vehicle during the day. I'll leave it to the train boffs to tell you precisely what it was doing, suffice it say for now that it was engaged in electrification preparatory works.

Buffering up..... it's a track tamping machine which checks that the rails and sleepers are at the right alignment horizontally and vertically, and compresses ('tamps') the ballast against and under the sleepers to provide support. Yes, when working it does make a fair bit of noise from the tines and vibrating rams handling the ballast. Bigger picture and a few more details from its operator here: http://www.balfourbeatty.com/capabilities/rail-engineering/plant/tr...
You can see in Hugh's picture some new uprights for the wiring masts, level with the machine.
WoW! Its the steelwork for the overhead line supports that got me!
I assume that the tamper had been working towards the camera. It wouldn't be able to work any closer because of the rails laying in 'four foot'. The tamper will probably stable in the Upper Holloway 'cripple siding' unless its needed somewhere else during the week.
