Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

According to the Council website, Haringey have just awarded Streetcar a contract to operate Haringey’s car club scheme, which will offer members access to 41 car club vehicles at 22 locations across the borough.

They are asking for people's views on the 22 proposed locations, with extra locations being added as membership and demand across Haringey increases. The consultation will run from Thursday 15 January to 5 February 2009.

Personally think this sounds great. I have not yet pored over the 22 locations with an A to Z, but only one very obvious Harringay site (Stanhope Gardens).

I'd be interested in how the Haringey scheme compares to the standard Streetcar scheme (as this is already in operation locally).

Thanks for spotting this, Alison. I'm not sure that it is different to the standard Streetcar scheme, though. Already, anybody in the position of owning parking space that they don't use can rent that space to Streetcar and I presume the council is doing the same (presumably either from metered spaces or CPZ allocation). This map from the Streetcar site suggests that Harringay is very under-represented currently compared to surrounding areas.

Yes Haringey and Harringay have been under represented because up till now the council hasn't been willing to hand over street space to a car club scheme. Looks like they may have started to see the error of their ways.

For families considering using this scheme it can depend on what size of cars are being offered. Most are small two door vehicles.
Ah, so that explains the map above - the divide is between Haringey and Islington I think.

At the moment Streetcar have one car in the Arena carpark (it is shown on the map above) and the one planned for the Gardens. I'm going to comment on the lack of facilities on the ladder, especially when compared to what is on offer in other boroughs. I don't see how this sort of scheme can really help unless the cars are conveniently located.
We've been using streetcar for a few years and have frequently requested one on the ladder but have failed so far. I didn't realise Haringey's opposition to them which explains the issue.

The one on the map is not in Arena but in the housing estate just behnd it, that's the one we use the most currently.

The issue we now face is trying to logistically get car seats out to the street car and a buggy if on your own. Don't know if anyone else has this issue and if so to try and get one with a car seat fitted?
one other option is car sharing, which we do with another family on the ladder. it works well if both parties are light car users. there is no reason why we couldn't set up a ladder/harringay HOL car club with a few cars around the area! anyone interesed?

How does your twin car share work Adam?
we both own the car, we split all major costs 50/50 (insurance, servicing etc), with petrol we pay for what we use by writing the mileage down and working it out every 3 months and we use an online calendar to book the car when we need it
Very interesting. Does it have any implications for insurance?
Only downside (as the other half of this share) is that as the non-registered owner, I'm only a nominated driver on teh insurance policy (as is my wife) so we don't get the benefits of any no-claims bonus, Adam does. Fine while we're sharing but if/when it ends, means our insurance will start from a zero-bonus base. But it's easy to get insurance - you just have all the drivers on as nominated drivers (only a small bit extra I believe).
I should add to Adam's comment that it helps if you share it with a
bike-facist eco-Nazi who only uses the car in very extreme circumstances. Cheers Adam:)
Further to Adam's posting: we don't live on the ladder but just over the railway lines in Crouch-End/Hornsey and we've been interested for a while in doing a private car-share scheme of the type Adam mentions. (This is no coincidence: we were Adam's previous car-share partners for 18 months but lost out when we went to the US for a year and Adam had to find someone else, damn!).

Our experience of car-sharing with Adam was very positive: much cheaper than Streetcar as it cuts out the middleman. Also feels better when people can do something for themselves rather than having to go through some big, commercial enterprise whose motivations have to do with profit, not community service or the environment. Keep it simple, keep it local, I say. Of course car sharing requires trust and flexibility so is easiest done with friends. There will always be some who prefer the anonymous, customer/business relationship, I suppose, but surely many have seen the light? You'd think so wouldn't you?But despite littering Crouch End with small ads, speaking to the local FoE group, friends etc. we've had no luck finding car-share partners out there. Sadly, it seems a most people, even if they like the idea in principle, just don't quite feel ready to make the jump. (So we joined Streetcar in Sept and have found it much less than optimal).
