Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This school seems to be by miles the worst offender in the area.

The parents park illegally on double yellow lines directly opposite the school, blocking traffic and cause a very significant danger to children emerging between parked cars to go to school.

There is both free and pay and display parking within meters of the school.

The parents who park illegally are also verbally abusive, and I have witnessed one occasion where a pedestrian child was nearly hit by an illegally parked car who pulled out quickly without looking.

I have tried contacting the school and headteacher, but as far as I can see no action has been taken. If anything the situation is getting worse.

I worry that a child/ other road user will be hurt.

What can be done?

Email the council about this. The transport department is looking into banning cars around schools just as the trial in Edinburgh. If we can harnass support for this, the council might be more inclined to take action. Please do, as so important. People need to realise the pollution problem is in their hands. Not only do 34 people per day in London die from the effects of air pollution, they are also contributing to the rise in chronic pulmonary illnesses such as asthma.
You absolutely need to get the Head on side. When I wrote to Ian Scotchbrook the Head at S Harringay Juniors he immediately sent a text to all parents and a strongly worded message went out in the next school newsletter too. This combined with a few emails from both myself and him to the Council saw a Parking Enforcement Officer sent on random mornings and afternoons and there has been a vast improvement since.

Hi Natasha - this is a problem around a lot of schools and has been discussed on HOL before. My experience  is that school staff may be reluctant to get involved for fear of upsetting parents. This is even though parents are effectively endangering children's lives. The school want the Borough to do more and the Borough want the school to do more. Sadly, some people think they are entitled to park on double yellow lines even though they are not entitled to. If you see what I mean. However I saw an interesting response to people's sense of entitlement at Gladesmore in N15. They put out these signs on the double yellow lines outside the school

The problem is that it is not down to the schools to enforce- and I suspect they feel they have enough to do without managing parents doing drop offs... That said, one member of staff on the footpath for 30 mins every morning, greeting children and parents, and moving cars on may not be a great hardship.

Deborah. What is the Edinburgh trial, I do not know about this... Have you got any info you can share?

Yes, it's very easy to sympathise with the schools point of view. At the primary schools I work at, there is always at least one, usually two, members of staff directly outside school at every drop-off and pick-up. This still does not effect people's behaviour. It leaves me speechless to be honest.

The problem is this school never has anyone outside, nor do they put signs out like those seen outside Gladesmore. They don't even remind parents about parking in the newsletter. They seem to literally do nothing apart from dismiss it as something for the council to deal with.

I regularly go past a lot of schools in the area, and have never seen illegal parking outside them on the scale seen outside St. Mary's. It literally blocks the whole road.
Find out who the Child Protection Officer is at the school - they have to have one by law - and contact them to get it sorted. This is a child safety issue. Make them sit up and take notice....and badger the Council too...they will send a Parking Enforcement Officer if you make enough fuss...and you're right that it's dreadful there... I used to drive past St Marys to get to Tiverton School round the corner and it was really chaotic and dangerous
I'll see if I still have the email address of the Parking Enforcement Manager at the Council who was very helpful...
Thank you Antoinette. Shockingly they even park like this when the parking enforcers are there. Nothing deters them!

Eventually found it - the lady I spoke to was Dayra Rios - dayra.rios@Haringey.gov.uk - I also have a direct line telephone number for her if you want to message me

I found myself playing the old battle axe outside my son's school by asking a car to move off the school zig zags this morning and it reminded me about your thread. Have you made any progress,?
Hi Antoinette, I tried calling the school last week but of course no answer as it was the holidays. I'll try to pick up the battle this week. Well done on asking a parent to move. I would be too worried they would become aggressive to do that.
