Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Dear people,
Just hoping someone might have some advice about smoking in adjoined residential property.
I live on Grand Parade in a top flat but the cigarette smoke from my downstairs neighbours is actually driving us crazy. We get on with them, and indeed have a friendly if cursory relationship with them. We have spoken to them on many occasions and have made some headway but they tend not to give a hoot in the long run. They have also been asked to smoke outside on their balcony by their landlord AND the company that runs the freehold. It comes to nothing, especially in cold weather. I appreciate that they are allowed to smoke in their own home but the smoke comes piling up in to our flat and, in winter, we have to open our doors and windows to alleviate the stink (occasionally eye watering). I have two young children, one of four years and one of six months. This makes no odds.
Is there anything I can do? If they want to smoke and increase their chances of getting cancer, fine. Not my kids!

Jimbo, I think you might find that their landlord will be more inclined to listen after the visit by the bizzies!
You'd think. But since we let them know via (cowardly) text, not a sausage.
I agree with Michael. You should see this as an opportunity to put the pressure on the Landlord. But a text isn't going to cut it. Get on the phone and have a proper rant. Nobody wants someone shouting at them. And keep the pressure on. A landlord wants an easy life. Try and get a commitment from them to not renew their rental agreement when it becomes due. They are likely to be on an annually renewable contract. And in the meantime a rolled up towel behind the front door costs nothing....
Have you read the guide from ASH? ash.org.uk › files › documents › ASH_827

They helpfully set out some steps you can take to protect your home and (if it's really bad) to complain to the relevant authorities.

I'm sorry to hear you live above smokers. It's one thing to have sound problems but smoke problems must be hard to stomach especially in winter.
Thank you. It's one thing me and my partner being poisoned but my little kids!?! It's just not fair on them.
Oh, and another thing... we inherited their bed bugs last year. It's cost me nearly three hundred quid in treatments to get rid of them!
The rozzers arriving does finally seem to have had an effect. The dodgy bloke is being kicked out. I wait to see if the smoke issue abates as I am assured by the remaining tenants it will.
Again, thanks for all your support. X
Wow. What a turn of events! Hope it all pans out well... I think the future looks bright... With one tenant gone, the others will no doubt not want to rile the landlord so should buckle down... good luck
Doubtless I want you in the loop for future updates. X
You just made me laugh out loud. Brilliant. Ta. X

Here's an example (from yesterday) of the strength of nicotine addiction—and partial honesty.

We once drove through Las Cruces going from El Paso to Santa Fe and believe me, there's not a lot else to do there. "One Horse Town" is an insult to horses.
