Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There are two sections of the New River owned by Thames Water that could be improved significantly. I am considering applying for a ward grant.

The idea is to put a winding path down both stretches which will divide the land into a series of themed gardens. For example:

  • An orchard and herb garden
  • A Moorish Garden with palms, climbing roses, jasmine etc
  • An Afro-Caribbean Garden with palms, ferns, banana etc
  • A willow garden with small grafted weeping willows and other types of willow shrubs
  • and quite a few more options. There is lot of space for all sorts of diversity.
  • and plant the boundary with Hawthorne and May for a magpie free zone for small birds

Islington has quite an interesting New River Walk in Canonbury which gives some idea of what can be done.  http://londonist.com/2009/12/nature-ist_new_river_walk

What degree of interest is there in planning, designing this endeavour and help make it?

This land could be much better than its current utilitarian design.

Brilliant idea

Pleased to see at least one person is interested.   I think this piece of land has a lot of potential that should be realised.

Which sections of the New River are you referring to. I only know the section on the Ladder....

There a quite a few sections. Starting at the Waterworks by the New River flats, then a  bit west of Wightman down to the bridge, then another bit east of Wightman Road which runs between the houses on the ladder then into Finsbury Park.

I had exactly the same thought. The existing diversity of bird and wildlife living near the river is already incredible. Even seen a Kingfisher. I think bats may also live in the wall near Hornsey (although that might be a step too far). Do you know of any particular grants that might be possible?

I think this is a great idea. What key areas of the River are you considering? If it's the path that runs behind the rail service area it might be a good idea to involve Network Rail and find out if they will part fund this. They ha e done this near the sidings just past Finsbury Park.

I have started the ball rolling by putting the idea to Thames Water and trying to find out what Planning Permissions Haringey would give on the land. My guess is a lot of it cannot be built on because of proximity to the River and Railway Line. Some of it probably can be built on but there is no road access which means all the building materials would have to come through a small gate.

Are you suggesting that housing be built on the New River banks ?

Initial post indicates not...

Well yes, but now Patrick is talking about planning permission, " cannot be built on " road  access and building materials. I'd like to know more.

I do however think it should be kept as wild as possible and wild gardens created for bio diversity as there are too few wild areas in the area. Perhaps the London Wildlife Trust or BTCV could advise on this.

Hi there.  This is a great idea.  I have been talking to Thames Water over the past year and because of my efforts, the pathway on the Wightman Road to Hornsey Station part of the New River Walk has been upgraded;  new plastic has been put on the signs at the two entrances that indicate that it's the walk;  a rubbish bin has been put at the Hornsey Road entrance.  A lot of rubbish was also removed at the time and the graffiti was taken off the two buildings along the route.  I'm not sure how much more Thames Water will want to do though.  Please keep up posted.
