Local MP: Mail-on-Sunday claims is on a Corbynista 'hitlist of moderates'

The Mail on Sunday claims that local MP and local resident David Lammy is on a Corbynista "hitlist of moderates" for de-selection. How credible is this?

It's the Mail on Sunday. Nothing they print is credible.
Actually just read it. What a mean little piece of "journalism". It supposed to be about the fact that Lammy, as a qualified barrister, is leading an investigation into claims of racial bias in the justice system, but manages to fling in a completely unsubstantiated and irrelevant bit of muck.

Deselection was a "maybe" when the party had a very low turnout for selections. Now it'll be bloody hard, those new members were not a bloc.

The comments are nearly as bad as the article.

Could someone from the LP tell us how these deselections might work? Isn't it just they decide to put him to a vote along with some other candidates again rather than just rubber stamping him for a job well done?

John here's another piece (Telegraph article) that relates to Momentum v Progress etc. and a discussion about possible deselections. It starts off with an account of a conviction for electoral fraud.

It's interesting, isn't it, that he would accept a job from Cameron but not Corbyn? Speaks volumes.

You're seeing things. He's accepted a job from the government. I think he's pretty certain he won't be a minister in the next government so why not show some pragmatism in his middle age with a problem that, being the MP for Tottenham, is presumably dear to his heart.

Good on him.

Heart?

Here is a link to the definition of what I thought was a well known idiom in English.

Well I never... who knew? John, mate, chillax.

Agree with Michael, it's the Mail on Sunday. Nothing they print is credible.

There was a similar article a few months ago in the Evening Standard that claimed David was on a hit list to be deselected by Corbynistas. People I know in the party said then, there was nothing of the sort is being talked about among the members.

Ah, the "moderates" (the good guys) are doing battle with the "Corbynistas"  (them tha bad guys).

Who says so?  The self-described reasonable, sensible, calm, rational, temperate, middle-of-the-road, moderate types with their enthusiastic adoption of right-wing neoliberal views and policies. Who appear to have been briefing right-wing newspapers. Including the middle-of-the-road, rational, factual, calm, sensible reasonable . . . Mail on Sunday?

Personally, I think David Lammy is pretty safe. The Labour Party does not automatically select a sitting member of Parliament. Why should we?  But neither does the Party issue its MPs with redundancy notices and invite them to reapply for their own jobs - if they dare.

Instead there's a procedure in the Labour Party Rule Book for a
'trigger ballot' system which gives the local Party an opportunity to decide whether or not a sitting Labour MP is again the candidate at the next General Election. It's one of the mechanisms for local Constituency Parties to make their MP democratically accountable.

The trigger ballot mechanism lets the whole local party, individual members and affiliated organisations, decide whether a constituency holds a full open selection contest - when other possible candidates are considered - or if the constituency re-selects the sitting MP as the party's candidate. (Provided they've said they want to stand again.)

If people on HoL (really truly) want to know more they can Google the Party's Rulebook which is online.

To declare an interest I'm a Labour Party member and have backed David Lammy from when Bernie Grant MP died. Both privately and publicly I don't agree with everything he says or does. But David knows that. And, unlike some other Party members, he values those independent-minded critical friends who sometimes tell you things you'd rather not hear.

A plague on both your houses! Although you were never as right-wing as Lammy, you have shifted to the Left in recent years because you wanted to be accepted in the anti-Kober camp. You were all for demolishing an historic building, thriving market and community hub for our cherished Latino community-- until you fell out with the leadership. You then, suddenly, became a cheerleader for the people's struggle in Northumberland Park. I suppose Lammy prefers people pissing inside the tent than out? Regardless of the rule book (red, no doubt?), the number of Parliamentary constituencies will be reduced by around 50. This means practically all MPs will see boundary changes - and they will find themselves competing with neighbours to get the nominations. I suspect Lammy is safe--for now. He, like you, has lurched to the Left. That said, I feel sure this will be his last Parliament - yesterday's news only gave weight to my hypothesis. Btw, has he said anything on the Bull situation?
