Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

When we first moved into our house, we found a Kelly's post office directory from 1935 in the attic which I unearthed again today. It lists all the addresses in the then Hornsey borough and who was the head of household.

Our house was occupied by Arthur Jackson for instance. What is also fascinating is that there was a synagogue on Wightman Road (the current church opposite the mosque) and a lot of residents with German or jewish names living on the ladder (remember, this was 1935).

The unfortunate resident of 26 Priory Gardens N6 was one Mrs Hitler, who I'm sure changed her name by 1939.

If you want to know who lived in your house or anyother address in 1935, just let me know.

I lived at 257 Wightman Road from 1923 to 1933 If you could check in the 1935 Kelly Directory I would be most grateful. There should be a Mr D Costigan as owner/occupier, at least that's the uncertain memory of an 85-year old! (Of course, it's who lives there today which would be even more interesting for this octogenarian). I suspect that if you could also look at 88 Fairfax Road you would see a Mr and Mrs John Francis Astrop, my late uncle and his wife. That would also confirm my memory.
With kind regards,
Arthur Astrop
Spot on with Daniel Costigan at 257. Your next door neighbours were Harry Sedgewick at 255 and Mrs Alice Cockram at 259. 88 Fairfax indeed shows John F Astrop in residence when you look in the name index in the directory, but the street index shows Frederick Clayton. Could Mr Clayton have been the owner while your uncle and aunt were his tenants (or vice versa)?

Anyone else on HoL know the current residents of 257 Wightman or 88 Fairfax?
To Michael Anderson
Wonderful! You're a wizard. I seem to recall the name Mrs Cockram (at No 259), but not Sedgewick at 255. It is gratifying to know that the old grey matter has not entirely vanished. You are almost certainly correct in suggesting that my uncle (John Francis Astrop) was renting 88 Fairfax Road. In fact, when my father (his brother), moved us to Surrey in 1933 he was the first in the entire family to own a house. (He was, of course, considered completely mad to have taken on a mortgage of £850.00 (for a brand new 3-bed house with detached garage and large garden). It is extremely kind of you to enquire if anyone in HoL knows the present occupier of 257 Wightman Rd. I shall consider myself extremely lucky if something turns up!
Kind regards,
Arthur Astrop
Arthur - have no fear; I will go along to 257 and do as I did for Flower - If they'll let me photograph inside I'll do so for you. if not. it'll just be the outside - assuming you want that?
Hugh - How kind of you. I have a photo of the outside of No 257, taken at least 10 years ago, and you may have seen it in the pages of 'memories' I sent you by snail-mail. I don't imagine anything significant will have changed in that time, so please do not waste a shot on the exterior. But if I could see the first-floor front - well, that's a different matter! It's there that I recall the gas-mantles over the fireplace, and looking out of the window (up the hill) at dusk, to see the baker's horse-drawn cart creeping down the hill emitting sparks from its back wheels as they skidded on the gravel.
But surely, Hugh, it might just be better if you enquired whether the present occupants of 257 would be willing to accept a letter from me? And then, with their permission, you passed their name to me? It seems quite wrong to involve you, and your valuable time, in my private obsession. It would also be better, perhaps, for me to suffer the possibility of a rejection, rather than you?
Finally, once more I want to congratulate you (and Liz) on HoL. I am getting so much pleasure from the photos and all the general historical data on Harringay which you have assembled. It is truly a treasure trove for me.
May 2009 deal kindly with you and yours
Arthur
Taken last week - The one name on the bell pushes seems to be Burnett

Dear John,
Wonderful! How kind of you to take such trouble. And inclusion of the name gives me courage to risk a tentative letter to the owner/occupier. I am quite ready for it to be ignored, put in the bin, or even to get a rather brusque reply. After all, he/she won't know me from Adam, and when I reverse the roles in my mind ........ Anyway, we'll see.
My grateful thanks again,
Do hope you and yours have a truly splendid New Year.
Arthur
Morning Christy. 101 was occupied by Mrs Millen
Hi Michael

If you can look up number 31 Umfreville Road please that would be great, thanks

Anthony
Occupant was William Frederick Simpson. Up at 54 was Miss Letty Austin's school of dance. Wonder what it is now?
Go on then Michael, the curiosity is too much. Can you look up 39 Cavendish Road please?
William Roderick Halfacre (what a lovely name). Other side of the road at 60 was The Cavendish School of Typewriting and Shorthand - Principal Mrs O M Wells. You also had the wonderfully named Florence Lampoutt (35) and Wilfred Wuff (59) living in the street.
