There's a story about food hygiene in London on the ITV London News site.
They also link through to the Food Standards Agency site, where you can find out what the ratings are for a specific restaurant or for restaurants in an area (e.g. N4).
You can also do more complex searches, e.g. places in N4 with ratings of 1 star or under (that link takes you through to the last page of the search, the zero rated places).
The search isn't just restaurants, it includes food shops and other places that provide food.
It's quite informative...

Yeah, that's pretty disturbing. Some results I didn't expect in N8!
Neither would I - standards, etc. But in fairness having a thorough look through the list reveals pretty quickly that you can't just tell from looking which establishments have questionable hygiene: plenty of kebab joints get 5 star ratings and some nice-looking cafes have scores that leave a lot to be desired.
One of the dodgiest looking caffs in my 'hood has five shiny stars while others I've been to and assumed were exemplary (including one I won't name that's mentioned elsewhere in this thread where I had coffee and cake yesterday) are getting a 1.
Yes, there are 2 establishments on the list which are the opposite of my shopping experience.
One of them has a 5 star rating and I have now stopped going there for various reasons; the products are sometimes past their sell-by/use-by date, badly maintained fridges so milk goes off, uneven flooring, general grubbiness etc. And the other one only gets 2 stars and is much better imo.
And I'm surprised that Beans & Barley gets 1 star very soon after opening and yet the owners other premises gets a 5.
Yeah, I wonder what's happened there. It could be to do with recent opening but as you imply you'd expect that to be a positive with all new equipment, etc. Certainly makes you think.
On a separate note, does anyone know what it means if an establishment isn't listed at all? I know one place that's older than B&B but is not available to view on the list. Could it mean it's operating illegally?
If it's anything like other councils I've been told about, it will have cut this particular budget considerably, so I suspect not.
Hi Guys,
Just to clarify, the 1 Star was due to paperwork which we had fallen behind on when we first opened, also, we hadn't received a form from the Haringey Council to register the business which was another reason.
We are due for another inspection very soon with better results guaranteed!
These Food Hygiene Ratings are very important. Well done to the following establishments scoring a 5 'Very good';
Blend
George's Fish Bar (Tottenham Lane)
Harringay Food Store
Jashan
Passion Cafe
Selale
Baldwins
But First Coffee
Café Lemon
Gokyuzu
Hala
Haran
Kofali Hot Nuts
Mezzo
Salisbury Tavern
Faltering Fullback Tavern
Ole Ale Emporium
North Harringay Primary
South Harringay Junior School
And 4 'Good' to;
Devran
La Vina
Moka
The Finsbury Tavern
To score 2 or below is not good at all;
Shanghai Noodle Bar 0
Beans & Barley 1
Tesco - Salisbury Promenade 2
Penang Satay House 2
Bianca Pizza 2
The Old Diary Tavern - Crouch Hill 2
Really? My SIL who does this for a living would not set foot in anything below a 4 and only reluctantly when it's below a 5...
Update: A number of places have had new inspections in the last few months & improved their scores, including:
Bianca Pizza is a 5 (inspected 23rd Sep 2015)
Riley's in Crouch End is a 5 (inspected 24th Sep 2015)
- hopefully this shows the system working as it should, improving performance!
