Back in February, Stephen Middleton wrote about a campaign gathering steam to create a national park in London.
The group wants to designate the city as the Greater London National Park, which would make it the first urban realm to take on that status. They say:
Together, we want to make the capital greener, healthier, more beautiful and prosperous by transforming it into a #NationalParkCity which would be a new kind of National Park. This is not just about re-branding the capital. This is a vision to inspire a million projects and bring about large-scale change through many small and achievable actions.
This week the London Assembly passed a motion to support the idea. It had support from all parties. The motion determines to
support the organisation in developing its vision, in particular by setting out how the Greater London Authority and the wider GLA Group could contribute towards its aims”. This political consensus is a great fillip for the project, and the first step to having a grass-root citizen-led National Park City legitimately recognised (pdf copy of motion here).
The aim now is to move things to the next level by gathering support through through the a National Park City Crowdfing initiative.
